We took a tour of Tufts University. My takeaways:
- Tufts has a 6-semester foreign language requirement. Languages include Latin and American Sign Language. You can also test out of this. All 6 semesters do not have to be in the same language.
- There is no Core Curriculum but there are Distribution requirements which is kind of the same thing. There are 10 in total: 2 natural science, 2 math, 2 humanities, 2 arts, and 2 social sciences. Some classes double count.
- There is a School of Museum of Fine Arts degree. It is a studio art and liberal arts degree. Their Art school is affiliated with MFA.
- There are 3 schools for Tufts Undergrad: Arts and sciences. Engineering. School of Museum of Fine arts. You have to choose. Different distribution requirements. Can take classes across schools.
- Tufts is a Tier 1 Research institution.
- This is a unique feature of Tufts: X college. Experimental college. Taught by professionals in Boston Area. Students can teach classes. One example is “Starting a Tech Company” which is taught by two undergrads who started Acena. Their company is a software healthcare company. John and Ian took a start-up class as undergrads that helped them start their company. They won a Tufts entrepreneurial competition that gave them $100k to fund their start-up. Now they have 6 people working full time including themselves. All of them are Tufts alumni.
- Fill out the extra info section to help admissions understand you. Ex: family issues. Concussion.
- Tufts has 2 supplemental essays. One of them is “What excites you about Tufts intellectual community?” You want to write that such that you should not be able to fill in with any other college.
- Tufts second supplemental essay: “What would you teach and why?”
- The application review is holistic. They look at data such as grades and scores. They look at the rigor of your classes based on what your specific school has to offer. They look at you within your context. Everyone is different.
- You want to communicate your voice. What kind of community member will you be? What are you passionate about?
- Nice and smart is how they characterize the student body personality.
- Supplements. A big part of the application. Where they hear your Tufts specific voice. Why Tufts?
