The Simon Wiesenthal Center and Museum of Tolerance Library and Archives is proud to announce the winners of the Once Upon a World Children’s Book Award for 2011. It selects two books a year to honor.
The criteria are:
To support and perpetuate the values and mandate of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance by honoring children’s books, aimed at young readers (ages 6-10) and young adults (ages 11+), which deal with issues of tolerance, diversity, human understanding, and social justice, thus inspiring readers to promote positive change in the world.
Winning books include chapter books, picture books, and nonfiction and demonstrate the following:
- Heroic deeds that lead to tolerance and social justice.
- Acceptance of social and personal responsibility.
- Good communications between people.
- A sense of urgency and empowerment of the individual.
- The importance of history.
I wasn’t familiar with this award though I do know about the Simon Wiesenthal Museum from living in Los Angeles.
My art teacher had a piece exhibited there and he said that it was the highlight of his career. I went through the past winner list and I haven’t read all the books, but the ones I have read (Through My Eyes, The Year of Miss Agnes, So Far from the Sea) are OUTSTANDING so it makes me want to read the entire list of winners, both past and present.
Which books have you read on this list and what are your favorite books for promoting diversity, social justice, and tolerance?
