I have learned a lot about back pain because my husband is golfer. The golf swing puts a lot of stress on the lower back and most golfers have back issues. Back pain is hugely problematic in all areas of life. No matter how old you are, what you do or a living, what your hobbies are, if you suffer from back pain, it affects the quality of your life. Back pain is really uncomfortable, and because of the pain, it can lead to a lack of sleep, poor appetite, and even depression.
The good news – at least in one respect – is that you’re not alone if you have back pain. It’s very common, with around one-third of the population suffering from this ailment at any one time. There are a number of excellent treatments, so you don’t have to suffer any longer; physical therapy is one treatment that many people find works for them.
What’s Causing Your Back Pain?
Before you can get started with back physical therapy, you’ll need to know what has caused the back pain to begin with. It might be that just by changing your chair or how you sit on it, or by rotating your mattress or resting up for a few days after a fall, your back pain goes away and never bothers you again.
However, if this is more deep-seated and causes you pain daily for many weeks, months, or even years, or if the pain worsens over time, then outside help is the best course of action, and a physical therapist is a good idea. Plus, back pain isn’t just about the injury; unexplained back pain can be a symptom of something like cancer, a herniated disc, or problems with the bowel. Your body is telling you something, so you need to listen and get help when necessary.
What To Expect From Physical Therapy For Back Pain
There are a number of ways that a physical therapist can help when it comes to back pain. They will typically suggest a variety of different movements for you to undertake. This will help improve your back and help the physical therapist understand what your movement and pain levels are like. Some of these exercises might include:
- Stretching
- Manual therapy
- Low impact aerobic activity
- Electrical stimulation
- Strength training
What Are The Benefits Of Physical Therapy?
When it comes to back pain, many people find that physical therapy helps them immensely. One of the many benefits that point towards this is that you will get tailored, personalized care. You can speak to your physical therapist one on one, and they will be able to create a treatment plan that works for you, taking your situation and your back into the account. This means quicker, easier healing in most cases.
Plus, because of the way a physical therapist works – they work with the body, not against it – there will be very little pain (and ideally no pain at all) when it comes to your treatment. Since back pain is terrible, it’s definitely a bonus if the treatment can relieve it and not cause any additional pain.
