How Do American Students Compare Worldwide?

The fears that the United States’ long term economic growth is endangered by its lack of highly educated populace is a well founded fear that Obama is sounding off. Yes, we stink at math. Here are relevant stats:

  • The 32 percent of U.S. students who achieved proficiency in math compares to 75 percent of students in Shanghai, 58 percent in Korea, and 56 percent in Finland.  Countries in which a majority – or near majority – of students performed at or above the proficiency level in math include Switzerland, Japan, Canada, and the Netherlands. How important is it to teach math to the gifted? I received this article from my husband who received it from our School Committee neighbor in Newton. The stats are alarming … for the U. S. with its emphasis on leaving no child behind is not doing a good job at the gifted in math and the result will be a loss of human capital which does not bode well. Read more…
