Meteor!: Science Of, Finding and Buying A Meteorite

Science Picture Book with Meteor Activity

I found this book a while ago in the discounted book room of my favorite book store. I will pretty much buy any picture book by Patricia Polacco. Her advanced picture books are based on her life and the people that she knows. I knew that, but for some reason I thought this book was set back in time — say around the 1800s — where a village spotted a meteor! Suffice it to say that I should not judge a picture book by its cover. Read more…

Top 10: Best Children’s Books Featuring Life-Changing Teachers (ages 4-12)

Books for Kids About Teachers Who Change Lives

As we ease into the summer and reflect on the our children’s past school year, it is the teacher who makes the difference between a great year and a mediocre or worse year.  I am sure that I am not alone in sending up prayers to get particular teachers for my kids next year.  This list is an homage to the exceptional teachers everywhere who dedicate their lives to making a difference.  And they absolutely do!  One day, one of their students may even write about their exception teacher as in the case of  a few of the books selected below. Chile: Children’s Books, Nobel Laureate Poets, Art and More

Chile: Culture, Children’s Books and Crafts for Kids

It all started with a post from PaperTigers about Mia’s Story. Having the same name, I had happened upon this book a while ago and was blown away by this picture book story of resilience and hope of a family living in a dump in Chile. While searching for more books, I thought that Pablo Neruda was from Chile and remembered a really great book sent to me by Scholastic a while ago. I though this would win a Newbery Honor that year, but alas, it did not. Still, it introduced me to his poetry meant for common people. Read more…

Favorite Books for 6th Grade from 6th Graders

Best Books for 6th Grade by Ninety 6th Grade Students

I was my daughter’s middle school visiting day when I chanced upon a wall of “first day get to know you” papers. There were the usual questions like “favorite color” and “what elementary school did you attend?” but I honed in on “favorite book.” Most of these sixth graders had a favorite chapter book but a few did not which made me sad. How to Get Your Kid to be a Fanatic Reader

Nurturing a Love of Reading in Your Child

Author James Patterson is revered as a god of fantasy adventure at my house. My oldest is a devoted fan and I am now resigned to pre-ordering his books for her. That he writes about reaching the middle school reluctant reader AND provides an amazing list of tempting books is music to my ears.

Authors who reach out to reluctant readers through their work deserve a special place in heaven! Thank you James Patterson! Read more…

4 Tips to Get Kids with ADHD to Read

How to Get ADHD Kids Reading

I didn’t know that Percy Jackson author, Rick Riordan, has a son who has ADHD and is dyslexic which is also true of Percy Jackson.  I love how Riordan made ADHD and dyslexia part of the storyline that shows the gifts that also come with ADHD and dyslexia — fast reflexes, ability to read Ancient Greek, etc. Read more…

Top 10: Strong and Capable Princess Books for Girls (ages 2-16)

Best Non-Wimpy Princess Books for Girls

My two oldest children are girls and they went through that rite of passage:  Disney Princess.  We had Disney princess dress up clothes, Disney princess tea sets, Disney princess books — you name it, we had it.  My husband joked that the person at Disney who thought up combining the Princesses better be running the company by now (or at least, highly compensated) for the stroke of genius.
