Top 10: Newbery-ish Small Town Quirky Chapter Books (ages 8-14)

4th Grade and 5th Grade Chapter Books

Is there something about small towns in America that has a special place in the hearts of the Newbery judges? Or is it the people who live there are somehow more quirky, more worthy of nuanced layers of personality ranging from slightly deranged to just plain weird? Are murder and violence somehow easier in a small town? I doubt that. Perhaps it’s easier when resentments simmer for decades or even generations. Read more…

Top 10: Best Picture and Chapter Books That Deal with Bullies

Books for Kids About Bullying

I have a very Politically Incorrect story to confess (my favorite kind!). My youngest is a boy and very small for his age. When he was in preschool — a wonderful preschool with an equally wonderful teacher and assistant teacher — another little boy his size bullied him by whacking him on several occasions with a block that is basically a 2 x 4 chunk of wood. I witnessed this during the wait time before the drop off. Read more…

The Hunger Games Age Appropriateness

My 10-year-0ld, PickyKidPix, read The Hunger Games series against my wishes though it’s not like I’m going to go ballistic over something like reading! It’s just that I would have preferred for her to wait, even a year, so that she would get more out of it. No such luck. She challenged her table mates to a reading race. Pretty soon half of her class was powering through the series much to the chagrin of her teacher, who agreed with me about waiting, even half a year. Read more…

3rd Grade Reader Challenge for Hockey Books

Hockey Books for 3rd Grade Boys

I’m continuing my search for books that my 3rd grade reluctant reader friend who likes funny will read. He’s a very sporty kid but his mom says his favorite sport is hockey and she hasn’t had luck finding any books on this sport. There are plenty of baseball and basketball books, and he plays those sports and more, but she thinks that if I can find hockey, he’ll read them happily. This is part of the reading strategies we’re coming up with. I’m excited to get him reading so I searched and found these hockey chapter books including early chapter books, fiction, non-fiction and biography. Read more…
