4 Tips to Get Kids with ADHD to Read

How to Get ADHD Kids Reading

I didn’t know that Percy Jackson author, Rick Riordan, has a son who has ADHD and is dyslexic which is also true of Percy Jackson.  I love how Riordan made ADHD and dyslexia part of the storyline that shows the gifts that also come with ADHD and dyslexia — fast reflexes, ability to read Ancient Greek, etc. Read more…

Best Chapter Books for 5th Grade Because They Are So Awesome

We lost power for 28 hours from Hurricane Irene yesterday even though by the time it reached Boston, Irene was just a tropical storm. 24+ hours without screens turns out to be a long time for me though my kids made out fine by taking the emergency lamp to the basement to pretend to camp out. By 10 p.m., I was pretty tired of the blackout was using my Color Nook as a light source while rereading David Senderis books. Read more…

So many cute photos this week! Thank you to everyone who submitted a photo. I will post them all eventually and typically post in the order received. Just as a reminder, remember to turn your geo tag/location feature off your smart photo under the photo section if you don’t want anyone to be able to know where your photo was taken. Here’s my post on that. I wanted to catch up on these cute photos and then return to posting on kids reading to pets so stay tuned for that next week. And I always need photos! Please email me at pragmaticmom.com(at)gmail(dot)com. Just substitute (at) for @ and (dot) for . Thank you! Read more…

The Pharaoh’s Secret: Like The Red Pyramid But Better!

More Books Like Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

Marissa Moss‘s The Pharaoh’s Secret is a departure from her popular Amelia’s Notebook series but what a great departure it is … along the likes of Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles:  The Red Pyramid, but I actually think this book is better than Riordan’s which surprises even me because I love his work deeply! Percy Jackson + Chinese Mythology = The Monkey King’s Daughter

Chinese Mythology Action Adventure Book for Kids

I do really like Asian American children’s literature.  It is to be a new but growing genre.  So when I was offered The Monkey King’s Daughter by T. A. DeBonis to review, of course I said yes.  It came in the mail and sat on the kitchen counter for just a couple of hours when my oldest came home from school, saw it, and took it up to her room, intrigued.  The next day, after reading late into the night judging by the difficulty we had in waking her up for school, she said that she loved the book and to please get her the rest of the series.
