Best Chapter Books for Newly Independent Readers (ages 6-9)

Best Books for 1st Grade and 2nd Grade (when kids start reading independently)

I find that there is a void for newly independent readers. You know, the readers that have graduated from Henry and Mudge and insist on chapter books, but not ready for Newbery Award books. While there are a plethora of chapter books, the quality of many series books is low with a repetitive and tiresome story line and limited vocabulary. Read more…

Easy Chapter Book Series for Girls: Clementine

Clementine is the New Ramona Quimby

Clementine series by Sara Pennypacker

My oldest received the first book, Clementine, from her book club.  She liked it so much that we got the rest of this early chapter book series.  I noticed it won a Massachusetts Book Award in 2007.  Finally, the other day I found the books tucked away on a high bookshelf and read them and I can see why everyone loves them so much.  I’d describe them as Junie B. Jones in third grade…she’s nicer to her little brother now.  She still gets in trouble but her heart is as big as her imagination and she’s a lot of fun. Read more…

Top 10: Best Beginning Chapter Book Series (ages 6-9)

Easy Chapter Book Series for 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade

Dragons and aliens and dinosaurs, oh my!  And for girls, there are interesting, mischievous girls to meet, as well as cousins who are really sweet. This is a category of early chapter books, beginning chapter book — more advanced than Henry and Mudge but not ready for Newbery Award winners — that is sorely lacking in quality series.  I sought out a bunch of new early chapter book series to f ind more options and I’m happy to say that there are some new good ones!  I also “test drove” out my recommendations on my own kids and their play dates … and the verdict was positive. Ivy and Bean was a hit – twice over.  Cobble Street Cousins were a hit in my 2nd grader’s entire class, and Clementine, though slightly more advanced is well worth the effort.  Read on for the rest! Top 10: Best Middle Grade Chapter Books by my 8yold Daughter (grades 3-7)

Best Books for 4th Grade

My middle daughter is so picky that she started her own blog on the things that she likes. Getting her a book she likes for me is an education in getting reluctant readers to engage. Tonight at dinner she asked me to blog on her blog to drive traffic to it. Smart kid. I told her that she needs to put up 4 posts first so that readers will know what her blog is about. This is her second post but I changed the book descriptions. If you want her opinion on why she likes these books, please read her post at Picky Kid Pix. (She’d be delighted with some traffic and she doesn’t mince words!). Read more…

Easy Harry Potter Series: Ghostville Elementary

Easy Chapter Books for 2nd Grade

My middle daughter wanted to post on this series and this is what she says:

” This is kind of like a Harry Potter for kids in first or second grade. Maybe even Kindergarten if a parent reads aloud to their child. It’s about these kids in third grade and they get moved down to the basement classroom, and they start to think that there are ghosts in their room (and it’s true!). This is a series that I highly recommend. There are eleven or twelve books. Read more…

Clementine is the new Ramona

Move Over Ramona: Clementine is Here!

One of our favorite literary characters that my 8-year-old daughter and I agree upon is Clementine.  She’s a cross between Ramona (of Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary) and Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park.  What is magical about this excellent series is that it has all the charm of a Ramona book but with the level of difficulty of a Junie B. Jones book. And while  Clementine has some personality traits that are similar to Junie B. Jones, she  is more mature while  also possessing the vulnerability and spunkiness of Ramona.  In short, Clementine is THE PERFECT BEGINNING CHAPTER BOOK SERIES FOR KIDS, and by chapter book, I mean real chapters, not the Henry and Mudge kind.
