My going-into-fourth-grade middle child has a summer reading assignment. She must read five books and do a book report project by the first day of class. Even though we read year round, she is protesting and slightly stressed about this homework. To select these books, I consulted My Best Book Lists and came up with these five.

Top 10: Best Chapter Books for Summer Reading (Incoming Grades 3-5)
If your elementary school is like my elementary school, kids entering grades 3-5 need to read 5 or so books during the summer (and do a book project on one of the books). It’s not normally a struggle to get my kids to read 5 books during the summer except for the selection of the books because the summertime reading has to be especially engaging to compete for their time! These 10 books should do the trick. And if your child reads 5 books and fills out a form from Borders Bookstore, she or he can get one of ten selected books for free.
Kids’ Favorite Books: Children’s Choice Book Awards
The Children’s Choice Book Awards is the only national children’s book awards program where winning titles are selected by young readers of all ages. The good news here is that there is a very high probability that your child will like these books too! The children (and teens) have spoken! These are their favorite books for 2011!
The Pharaoh’s Secret: Like The Red Pyramid But Better!
I would not say to read The Pharoah’s Secret OVER The Red Pyramid. Actually, I ‘d recommend reading both. And then compare/contrast. The Pharoah’s Curse focuses on the rare female pharaoh Hatshepsut and gives the reader insight to the court intrigue that is as fascinating, if not more so, as the Renaissance English version.
Percy Jackson + Chinese Mythology = The Monkey King’s Daughter
I would recommend The Monkey King’s Daughter as a fun read for girls ages 8-12.
Percy Jackson + Ancient Egypt = Red Pyramid
Capability:Mom’s kids are big fans of Percy Jackson as is my eldest so I thought I’d speed through the book, review it and pass it on. I read about a page when said eldest noticed the book and appropriated it for herself. Three days later she pronounced the book even better than the Percy Jackson series which is a huge compliment because she sped through the Percy Jackson series in a matter of weeks.
Top 10: Best Boy AND Girl Characters in Adult and Children’s Books
I found this pair of posts on some great blogs and the dicotomy of boys versus girls made me want to post them both. I have not read all these books, but these lists make me want to! Thank you MustLoveBooks and ConsumedByBooks!
