4th Grade Book Club: Retold Modern Fairy Tales

Retold Modern Fairy Tales

The Witch’s Guide to Cooking with Children is a modern retold fairy tale chapter book. My middle daughter’s book club read it for the December meeting and it paired nicely with Gingerbread House decorating. The five girls in her book club all thought the book was funny; the idea of a witch living in your hometown is intriguing! Just like Hansel and Gretel which this book riffs off of, the story is an adventure with a daring rescue. Read more…

Celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Today!

Celebrating Dr. Seuss on His Birthday!

My latest revelation (and I’m always late to the party) is that an author that I’ve always loved as did my children, Theo (Theodore) LeSieg is ACTUALLY Dr. Seuss (a.k.a. Theodor Geisel). He has more pseudonyms than an international espionage agent! Our very favorite book and probably the first book that my kids read on their own delighted in their ability to decode is Ten Apples Up on Top but I wish That I Had Duck Feet is a close second favorite book of all time. Books for Kids Grieving for Pet

It is never easy when a pet dies whether it’s expected or unexpected, particularly for children. My Mom Friend at Yoga asked for picture book recommendations when her son’s hamster died. She knew this would be hard on her son and my other Mom Friend recommended they read the Rainbow book out loud during the burial in the backyard.

Luckily the ground wasn’t frozen over because the weather was still quite cold. The Mom reported back that the burial went well and that reading the book helped make the ceremony special and personal. I think they referred to The Legend of the Rainbow Bridge but there actually two picture books on the same topic with  very similar names. Read more…

SAT Vocabulary Words in Picture Books: New Shoes for Sylvia

Picture Books That Build Vocabulary

The words for Week 10 are from the picture book, New Shoes for Sylvia by Johanna Hurwitz, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. To think that reading picture books will expose your child not only to a wonderful and gorgeously illustrated story, but to SAT building vocabulary. Jerry Pinkney is also a Caldecott winning illustrator and we are enjoying The Lion and the Mouse at home which  is an amazing work that tells the story solely through watercolor illustrations with almost no words. This is not the case for New Shoes for Sylvia! Read more…

Best Historical Fiction Books for Kids

Please give a warm welcome to my librarian/blogger extraordinaire/Mom Friend The Fourth Musketeer! She graciously agreed to guest post on her favorite Historical Fiction chapter books of 2011. I really, really wanted her list because she’s an expert in children’s and young adult historical fiction, and selfishly, I wanted this list for myself and my kids! We will work our way through it in 2012! Read more…

Top 10: Books That Teach Kids Compassion (ages 2-14)

Books That Teach Kids Compassion

Learning about our differences can be a powerful way for children to see from another person’s point of view.  I encourage all parents to introduce some of these chapter books or others like these to their children and use these stories as a reference when children bring up differences in school, particularly with special needs classmates.  Because how great would it be if it were OUR child who can reach out with compassion like MacKenzie in The Friendship Puzzle?! Top 10 Book Lists for Kids

These are my Top 10 Book lists. Did you know that I actually put my favorite book as #1 and my second favorite book as #10? I wasn’t sure if people would read the lists as a countdown from 10 to 1 or as a list from 1 to 10. The #10 spot also is the first book that you see, so I wanted to make sure it was an enticing one.
