Great Dinosaur Books for Kids

My son went through a serious dinosaur phase that lasted almost a year when he was 4-years-old. Now he’s into Pokemon….sigh! I prefer reading about dinosaurs! But if you can’t beat them, join them. If I am going to read nothing but dinosaur books, at least I want a range of dinosaur books from non-fiction to fiction to counting books and alphabet books. Here are our favorite books, both story books and non-fiction books.

Halloween Chapter Books for Kids

I’m not one to buy Halloween presents for my kids, but if I did, I’d buy each of them a book from this list. I would, however, pick a Halloween themed books for my children’s book clubs if I were hosting in October. The great thing is that kids, mine at least, like these books year around. Halloween is probably a kids’ favorite holiday! Read more…

Best Math Games to Add to 10

Adding to Ten Math Games

Adding to 10 is probably the most important addition fact set your child needs to know because it helps to break down longer addition sums by creating easy to add groups of ten.  In addition, your child can learn adding to nines by knowing the math facts to 10 and noticing that one of the numbers is one less.  So…if 6 +4 = 10, then 6 + 3 must be 9 because 3 is one less than 4. Best Non-Wimpy Princess Books for Girls

My two oldest children are girls and they went through that rite of passage:  Disney Princess.  We had Disney princess dress up clothes, Disney princess tea sets, Disney princess books — you name it, we had it.  My husband joked that the person at Disney who thought up combining the Princesses better be running the company by now (or at least, highly compensated) for the stroke of genius. Best Apps for Drawing That Kids Love

I didn’t have an iPad when my kids were in preschool so we completely missed this phase. My youngest had access to my iPhone and he played with the Grinch camera and made us and all his preschool friends into Grinch-like creatures after snapping their photo with my phone. Had I known that it was a precious moment in time, never to be duplicated, I would have saved those faces and emailed them to their moms if I were totally together. Read more…

Top 10: Books for Kids with Science Concepts

Best Kids Books with Science Ideas

I will confess that I have been thinking and working on this post for MONTHS. The gist in my mind was science-y chapter and picture books that are NOT non-fiction, that make science fun and accessible, and excite a child’s imagination. Yep, it’s taken a while to find enough books that fit this criteria to make it to 10 but I think these are worthy of this list. What do you think? What non-fiction science-y books do you and your children like? Are there enough to actually make this a new children’s lit. genre? Now THAT would be exciting! Read more…

Frog and Toad Science Fun for Kids

Fun and Easy Science of Frogs and Toads for Kids

Can you spot the toad? Ok, it wasn’t that hard. This toad hopped across my path the other day at the off leash dog park. It was the largest toad I’ve seen around here, almost the size of my fist. I happened to have my iPhone with me so I took a picture very quietly. Luckily, my dog didn’t spot it. I thought the toad has pretty good camouflage! What do you think? Can your child spot it?

Music App for Kids on Sounds of the Orchestra

Introducing Orchestra Instruments App for Kids

I had to reach back into the recesses of my brain to remember junior high school orchestra.  I played violin for a few years, but actually my younger sister is the talented musician in our family.  She studied classical piano and competed successfully as a kid and is now a piano teacher in Southern California where she teaches out of two locations.  She told me that her young children like this app very much!  I’m not surprised because my sister is an early technology adopter and this app combines two things she’s really into: her iPad and classical music.
