Books for Kids Who Hate to Read

I discovered this really excellent list of chapter books to hook reluctant readers by SchoolBusProject.com.  I love how it’s organized by topics and also that it has a range of books within each topic for different ages and abilities. Finally, I love how the books are so well chosen out with many award winning chapter books across a whole jumble of children’s book awards as well as kids books that they will truly enjoy.  Even if your child is not a reluctant reader, scan the list. There are discoveries waiting to be made here! Read more…

Best Chapter Books for 5th Grade Because They Are So Awesome

We lost power for 28 hours from Hurricane Irene yesterday even though by the time it reached Boston, Irene was just a tropical storm. 24+ hours without screens turns out to be a long time for me though my kids made out fine by taking the emergency lamp to the basement to pretend to camp out. By 10 p.m., I was pretty tired of the blackout was using my Color Nook as a light source while rereading David Senderis books. Read more…

Happy 4th of July: Kids Caught in the Act … of READING!

Kids Caught Reading

Thank you, as always, for the adorable pictures of kids so very happily reading! I hope they inspire your kids to take a wacky picture … in an unusual place, with a pet, sitting on a special chair, or cuddled up with someone. I hope that summer means that you can slow down. I know I need to slow down … and take some time to turn pages more slowly, whether it is on a eReader or an old-fashioned book! Read more…

Top 25: Children’s Fantasy Picture and Chapter Books

Best Fantasy Books for Kids: Picture Books and Chapter Books

I need this list for my oldest who loves adventure fantasy books like the Harry Potter series. I can’t keep up, so I was glad to find this list  of best fantasy chapter books and picture books from The Telegraph in the United Kingdom for her summer reading. I’ll keep you posted on which of these books she liked. Is it me, or am I the only one who thinks that the Brits read and write more and, frankly better than Americans? Could it be the weather that keeps them indoors more and cozy by the fire with a book? I’m not sure but I do find that they are a nation of readers. Read more…

Easy Harry Potter Series: Ghostville Elementary

Easy Chapter Books for 2nd Grade

My middle daughter wanted to post on this series and this is what she says:

” This is kind of like a Harry Potter for kids in first or second grade. Maybe even Kindergarten if a parent reads aloud to their child. It’s about these kids in third grade and they get moved down to the basement classroom, and they start to think that there are ghosts in their room (and it’s true!). This is a series that I highly recommend. There are eleven or twelve books. Read more…

Greek Mythology Picture Book today, Percy Jackson in a few years!

Young Zeus Picture Book for Kids is Perfect Introduction to Greek Mythology

I am a self-confessed mythology geek so I am always touting the Percy Jackson series as Harry Potter Meets Greek Mythology and getting kids to try out this series.  But my five-year-old was a little left out; The Lightening Thief was too scary for him so he saw a different movie that day.  But now things are looking up for him.  Young Zeus by G. Brian Karas bridges the gap so perfectly between Greek Mythology and Percy Jackson in this wonderful and mythologically accurate picture book.  Karas tells the story of  Zeus as a youngster and how he became the King of Gods minus some gory details.
