I discovered this really excellent list of books to hook reluctant readers by SchoolBusProject.com. I love how it’s organized by topics and also that it has a range of books within each topic for different ages and abilities. Finally, I love how the books are so well chosen out with many award winning books across a whole jumble of children’s book awards as well as books that I know kids truly enjoy. Even if your child is not a reluctant reader, scan the list. There are discoveries waiting to be made here!
Reading list for boys, grades 1-6. I love to find books that excite reluctant readers. The key is to find that magic intersection that marries your child’s just-right level with content that matches their interest and a layout that is visually appealing (small chunks of text broken by pictures, larger font size, etc.). Alas, this is a moving target. I have an actual person that I select these books for, my youngest son’s best friend’s older brother who is a 4th grader with my oldest. My mom friends have had success with these books for their reluctant boy readers and suggests you try them. If you want to purchase a book, click on the image of the book to buy at Amazon.com.
I met Jen Robinson at KidLitCon 2010 which was a great thrill for me because I am a HUGE fan of her excellent blog, Jen Robinson’s Book Page. My work friend, Nat, sent me this link so I am excited to share her words of wisdom on Boys and Summer Reading.
This was such a great list of books that I asked LiteratureForLunch for permission to repost and she graciously said yes. Enjoy!
Borders Kids’ Summer Reading Program: read any 10 books and get one of their specially selected books for free. And their book selection is excellent! Nothing to buy, but you need to stop in twice. Once to get the form. Once to get the book. Love it!
Brian’s Hunt by Gary Paulsen is Sam Gribley, of My Side of the Mountain, a little older, morphed with the movie starring Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer called The Ghost and The Darkness. Perfect for reluctant boy readers grades 4-6th.
