Spiritual Picture Books for Kids

We don’t go to church so we are studying world religions using picture books.  Demi has several wonderful picture books on this topic so when I was offered a book that she illustrated, I jumped at the chance. And then, by coincidence, Alexis York Lumbard’s husband emailed me. It’s such a small world but we live in the same town! Kismet? Karma? Fate? Who knows!

Teaching Kids about World Religions Particularly Islam

Talk about understanding our differences!  We have this program at our elementary school that is run by parent volunteers and it’s really excellent.  The content varies from year to year but includes Spectrum Disorders, Physical Disabilities and the like.  But then I got to thinking, we Americans tend to perceive those from the Arab world as potential threats.  This isn’t too different from WWII, when Japanese Americans were perceived as threats and thrown into internment camps (a point of reference that is very personal to me as my mother was forcibly relocated). Best Picture Books for Kids EVER!

I love picture books; it’s a complete story in 24ish pages with a beginning, a middle, and an end.  It’s a visit to an art gallery or a museum with beautiful artwork in all kinds of media — drawings, paintings, collages, and more.  It can transport you to another time and place, a different culture, or a different person’s point of view.  Picture books are NOT just for young children; I insist they are for everyone, adult and child alike.  My 4th grader’s teacher is reading Patricia Polacco’s picture books to the class and the kids are thoroughly enjoying them.  Picture books also make bedtime stories a pleasure because one reader can satisfy a wide audience.
