Books That Teach Kids Compassion

Learning about our differences can be a powerful way for children to see from another person’s point of view.  I encourage all parents to introduce some of these chapter books or others like these to their children and use these stories as a reference when children bring up differences in school, particularly with special needs classmates.  Because how great would it be if it were OUR child who can reach out with compassion like MacKenzie in The Friendship Puzzle?! Summer Reading for Kids to Win Prizes

When BlogFrog asked me if I wanted to get involved with Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club promoting their kids’ Summer Reading Series campaign, it was a no brainer. I love this stuff! Summer reading lists? That is  right up my alley. What is even better is that my readers will get a chance to win prizes just for sharing what their kids will be reading this summer. I’m interested in knowing. Sharing this info is a great way to discover new great books. Just like the Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club! Read more…

Top 10: Best Summer Coming-of-Age Books for Girls (grades 4-8)

Summer Coming of Age Books for Girls

This is what I was thinking when I came up with this kooky list:

  • Summer read, preferably on the beach or on vacation.
  • Has to be a good read but not too strenuous or stressful or heavy (no Grapes of Wrath vibe!).
  • The book is about the summer and/or beach and/or beachy vacation vibe; like, hey, we are all on vacation. You in the book and me in real life.
  • A great lead GIRL character.
  • Counts towards summer homework book assignment but was thoroughly enjoyable.
  • For incoming grades 4-6.

Can you think of any more coming of age chapter book for girls set during the summer? I’d love to add your pick! Thanks!

Top 10: Funny Picture Books to LOL with Your Child

My five-year-old son selected most of these books because they make him laugh. What are your favorite funny picture books? Thanks for sharing!

Honorable Mention

Peep and Egg: I’m Not Using the Potty by Laura Gehl, illustrated by Joyce Wan

Egg is not sure about potty training but Peep has a strategy to lure Egg to try. Spoiler alert: books and potty training are natural partners in crime! This is a gentle and humorous potty training book that kids of all ages will enjoy. My son who is 13-years-old thought this book is hilarious! [picture book, ages 2 and up]

Hot Rod Hamster by Cynthia Lord

This book arrived in the mail today and my five-year-old son insisted that I include it on the “funny book list on your blog.”  He made me read it 5 times today!  This is Cynthia Lord’s first picture book.  She also wrote the Newbery Winner chapter book Rules (which is outstanding).  This is a funny, rhyming book that appeals to hot rod racers!  It’s a very cute story about a hamster who is going to hot rod race and a dog helps him build his race car.  It’s really fun to read aloud! [picture book, ages 4 and up]

Best Funny Picture Books for Kids to LOL!

10. Leonardo The Terrible Monsterby Mo Willems

My son thinks the part where the little boy explains why he was crying is sooo funny that he’s actually memorized it!  The story is about a cute little boy monster who can’t scare anyone so he finds the most scardy cat kid in the world to scare. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
