Top 10: Best Beginning Chapter Book Series (ages 6-9)

Dragons and aliens and dinosaurs, oh my!  And for girls, there are interesting, mischievous girls to meet, as well as cousins who are really sweet. This is a category of early chapter books, beginning chapter book — more advanced than Henry and Mudge but not ready for Newbery Award winners — that is sorely lacking in quality series.  I sought out a bunch of new early chapter book series to f ind more options and I’m happy to say that there are some new good ones!  I also “test drove” out my recommendations on my own kids and their play dates … and the verdict was positive. Ivy and Bean was a hit – twice over.  Cobble Street Cousins were a hit in my 2nd grader’s entire class, and Clementine, though slightly more advanced is well worth the effort.  Read on for the rest! If your elementary school is like my elementary school, kids entering grades 3-5 need to read 5 or so books during the summer (and do a book project on one of the books).  It’s not normally a struggle to get my kids to read 5 books during the summer except for the selection of the books because the summertime reading has to be especially engaging to compete for their time!  These 10 chapter books should do the trick!! Top 10: Chapter Books with Activity to Get Boys to Read

Chapter Books with Activities for Boys Book Club

Some of my Mom Friends are dreading the summer reading requirements from school because their boys are not reading for pleasure yet.  So I put together this list that combines books with a related and fun activity as an incentive for  boys to read.  Yes, I believe in bribery.  It helps get kids over the hump to change their behavior on a temporary basis but that might be enough for them to realize that reading is fun.
