My brother-in-law turned me on to the Golden Apple Toy Awards, from GreatSchools, which are really great educational but fun toys vetted by kids, parents and teachers. I added a few more time-tested toys that we’ve used over and over for the last decade at my house.

Mandarin Chinese is becoming very popular in the United States. I review a small stack of books that cover learning Mandarin Chinese as well as Chinese Culture including The House Baba Built by Ed Young, Find Out About China: Learn Chinese Words and Phrases, Life in China, History and Culture, Ni Hao series and Chinese Paradise series.
The iPad is turning out to be a great communication tool for autistic children. I’m not one to buy Halloween presents for my kids, but if I did, I’d buy each of them a book from this list. I would, however, pick a Halloween themed books for my children’s book clubs if I were hosting in October. The great thing is that kids, mine at least, like these books year around. Halloween is probably a kids’ favorite holiday!

Do princesses really need rescuing? Please! I don’t like this message imparted to young girls so, in a perfect world, these are the books I’d read instead to my daughters!
What are the best iPad and iPhone drawing apps for preschoolers as well as older kids? I checked out some free ones (Scribble Kid and Doodle Buddy) and bought a few (Kids Finger Painter and Drawing Pad) to do a compare and contrast. My favorite is Scribble Kid for its versatility and price. And it saves trees!
