What are the National Book Awards?

On March 16, 1950, publishers, editors, writers, and critics gathered at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City to celebrate the first annual National Book Awards, an award given to writers by writers. The American Book Publisher’s Council, The Book Manufacturers’ Institute, and The American Booksellers’ Association jointly sponsored the Awards, bringing together the American literary community for the first time to honor the year’s best work in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. YALSA Award for Best YA Non Fiction

I guess I am a children’s book award junkie.  I really love all short lists for awards even more so than the actual award recipient.  There is just something so exciting about a short list; anyone can be the winner.  This genre,  young adult non fiction, is not what I am reading ahead of my eldest yet as she is just eleven, but I am excited to learn about this award and I’m pretty sure that it will fit the bill for one of my kids in the future. I track Top 10 and Top 100 lists that other people create on their blogs.  Usually, the lists don’t pertain to what I am interested in but every now and again, I find an awesome list of books.  But while the list of books is great, typically there are no images for each book.  I really like to see the image of the book because it helps me to find the books at the bookstore or library.  Plus, I like to link the books on my book lists to Amazon as there is more information on the book there including the feature to browse through a few pages.  And Amazon typically has the best prices.
