The Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in Translation is a literary prize awarded in the United Kingdom since 1996 to the translator of an outstanding work of fiction for young readers translated into English. I haven’t heard of many of these books but if you are looking for a book that no one has heard of, this is a great list with a wide range of age appropriateness. Your child might find a great book for summer reading!

Top 10: Classic Children’s Books Not Beloved Now (ages 3-14)
I did a post a few days ago on Top 10: Best Old Fashioned Children’s Books based on the books that I loved as a child and my kids do too. This is the ugly stepsister version.
Japan: Books for Kids on Shogun, Family Crests, Block Prints
We travel this week to Japan and go back in time with some stories of my family to the Daimyo Shogunate in Japan. I have chosen some kidlit to reflect the duality of Japan versus United States, and have featured artists who are reflected in the books including ukiyo-e masters Hiroshige and Hokusai and the father of Manga, Osamu Tezuka.
Top 10: Best Beginning Chapter Book Series (ages 6-9)
Dragons and aliens and dinosaurs, oh my! And for girls, there are interesting slightly mischieveous girls to meet as well as cousins who are really sweet. Short chapter book series can often have repetitive plot lines about nothing or language that is neither rich nor interesting. There is something special about each of these book series for the child AND the adult reading along.
Top 100: Truly and Honestly, Best Children’s Picture Books Ever!
This list is from Children’s Book Guide titled Top 100 Children’s Books of all Time. It really is the best list of picture books EVER! It made a little sad as I went through this list. On the one hand, I did manage to read most of these books to my three kids. On the other hand (the sad part), my youngest is almost too old for these books. I think we have another year or so, and then he’s pushing on into chapter books. Another era closed, I suppose, just like diapers to potty training and preschool to elementary school and beyond.
Children’s Book Authors Who Never Disappoint
You know how there are authors that your children always wait impatiently for the next new book? And maybe they do a great series which isn’t that much of a stretch. But then there are other authors that either 1) write in a wide range of genres from picture books to easy chapter books to YA fiction and EVERYTHING they write is amazing? Or 2) maybe it’s just that they never jave a dud even though everyone is allowed a dud when they are a prolific author. Or 3) their work is crazy imaginative! How do they DO that?!
Massachusetts Children’s Book Award 2011 (ages 7-16)
Our school librarian at our elementary school always has a shelf dedicated to these books and there is a challenge to the the 5th Graders to read the entire list. The reviews are from the Acton Memorial Library.
