1st Grade Books for Boys from the Book Fair

Book Fair Books for 1st Grade Boys

The annual school book fair at my kids’ elementary school is a much-anticipated and beloved fund-raiser. Parents and kids can buy books their teachers have selected as a gift and each class gets to visit the book fair, either just to browse or to buy. The book fair is a two-day event, opening before school begins and hosting a pizza night as well. This year, the pizza night suffered from a power outage, which is retrospect, could have been prevention work since power was fine during the recent snow storm. Read more…

Teaching Kids about Money: Spend, Save, Donate

Teaching Kids Financial Literacy Skills

I want to teach my children to handle money responsibly so I polled the money-savvy moms that I know to get their take on allowance. I got lots of great advice, but I found Mom Friend Sheri’s advice to work for me: weekly allowance is based on their age (a dollar a year) and earning allowance is based on doing a couple daily age-appropriate tasks. Books for Kids About Teachers Who Change Lives

As we ease into the summer and reflect on the our children’s past school year, it is the teacher who makes the difference between a great year and a mediocre or worse year.  I am sure that I am not alone in sending up prayers to get particular teachers for my kids next year.  This list is an homage to the exceptional teachers everywhere who dedicate their lives to making a difference.  And they absolutely do!  One day, one of their students may even write about their exception teacher as in the case of  a few of the books selected below. Advanced Picture Books That Teach Compassion

I’m starting a new little boy book club for my son and his best friend from when he was 15 months. The issue is that his best friend is a grade older. And his second best friend is two grades older. The moms are game to do a book club but I wanted to make sure the book  selections appeal to boys in grades 1 through 3 without going into chapter book territory. I decided to delve into the world of advanced picture books which I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE for rich vocabulary and the ability to transport into another culture, time or place. Read more…
