Our latest 5th grade book club for girls used Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O’Dell. The activities were very fun and easy to do. The perfect combination for busy moms to pull off!
I hosted my middle daughter’s book club this past week. She chose her all-time favorite book by which she judges all other books, Newbury Honor Book, The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. Activity 1: Create a Cricket Habitat with Actual Crickets to Bring Home.
Hiking around a pine woods with a dog and soccer ball makes for the perfect book club for The Penderwicks at Point Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall.
We were fortunate to have Middle Grade Author Karen Day as a guest at our 6th Grade girls’ book club where they discussed changes, Middle School, A Million Miles from Boston, and wrote short stories inspired by her talk.
My favorite KidLit book in the whole world, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, was a very successful and fun 3rd grade girls’ book club. The activity was to make lollipops which was a sneaky education in the science of cooking and to bake dog biscuits.
A Big THANK YOU to Karen Day for her visit! And just a shout out that SHE’S AN AMAZING SPEAKER. SHE IS OPEN TO VISITING SCHOOLS. Our elementary school brings authors into the classroom as part of our literacy program that is funded by the PTO. Here’s her contact info.
