This list, created in 1999 by The National Education Association, is the “All Time Greatest Hits” of children’s literature created by teachers.  There is also a Top 100  list created by children and strangely, many of the books are the same!  The original list is 1-100 with all the books in numerical order by votes but I have broken out the list by category types:  Picture Books, All Ages, Chapter Books (grades 3-6) and Young Adult.  Read more…

You know how there are authors that your children always wait impatiently for the next new book?  And maybe they write a great series but the books are very similar.  But then there are other authors that either 1) write in a wide range of genres from picture books to easy chapter books to YA fiction and EVERYTHING they write is amazing?  Or 2) They never seem to have a dud even though everyone is allowed a dud when they are a prolific author.  Or 3) their work is crazy imaginative!  How do they DO that?!  I don’t know but I do know that these authors never disappoint and they are all prolific and amazing writers. Clementine is the new Ramona

Move Over Ramona: Clementine is Here!

One of our favorite literary characters that my 8-year-old daughter and I agree upon is Clementine.  She’s a cross between Ramona (of Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary) and Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park.  What is magical about this excellent series is that it has all the charm of a Ramona book but with the level of difficulty of a Junie B. Jones book. And while  Clementine has some personality traits that are similar to Junie B. Jones, she  is more mature while  also possessing the vulnerability and spunkiness of Ramona.  In short, Clementine is THE PERFECT BEGINNING CHAPTER BOOK SERIES FOR KIDS, and by chapter book, I mean real chapters, not the Henry and Mudge kind.
