Best Bedtime Books to Read Aloud

Best Bedtime Picture Books for Kids

Thank you to Susan Marx for emailing me this lovely poem full of some of my favorite children’s books for young children. Reading aloud is a passion for her and Barbara and they have penned a book about it.

Her lovely poem took me down memory lane at bedtime with my kids. We didn’t read all these great picture books and board books, but we enjoyed many of them over and over through the years!!

Thanks for this trip! What bedtime books or read aloud books are your favorites? Did you spot any in the poem?

Best Picture Books to Build Vocabulary (ages 2-8)

These picture books are a fun way to build vocabulary effortlessly. I also have a series of posts on picture books with SAT vocabulary from the literacy specialist at our elementary school. She selects a series of picture books and pulls out big words along with a sentence with the word. Little kids like big words!

Best Picture Books You’ve Never Heard Of

Best Picture Books for Kids EVER!

I love picture books; it’s a complete story in 24ish pages with a beginning, a middle, and an end.  It’s a visit to an art gallery or a museum with beautiful artwork in all kinds of media — drawings, paintings, collages, and more.  It can transport you to another time and place, a different culture, or a different person’s point of view.  Picture books are NOT just for young children; I insist they are for everyone, adult and child alike.  My 4th grader’s teacher is reading Patricia Polacco’s picture books to the class and the kids are thoroughly enjoying them.  Picture books also make bedtime stories a pleasure because one reader can satisfy a wide audience. Top 5: Maurice Sendak Picture Books

Celebrating Maurice Sendak on His Birthday!

Happy birthday to Maurice Sendak today, beloved author and Caldecott winning illustrator. To be honest, I am not sure why I remembered that today is Maurice Sendak’s birthday. I am normally bad at remembering most people’s birthdays, but particularly bad at authors (note how I keep forgetting Dr. Seuss’!). Thankfully, I read about his birthday somewhere and stuck in a blog place holder. He is one of our favorite picture book authors and I noticed that both my girls and little boy love it — a tough feat to pull off! Read more…

Predicting Newbery and Caldecott Winners

Mock Newbery 2011

Ok.  So this is not really the list of Caldecott and Newbery candidates for 2011 but School Library Journal Blog’s A FUSE #8 PRODUCTION‘s best guess… but I have feeling that they know what they are talking about.  We shall see when the awards come out next year, but I’m betting they got quite a few correct! Top 10: Children’s Book Authors Who Never Disappoint

Best Children’s Book Authors

You know how there are authors that your children always wait impatiently for the next new book?  And maybe they write a great series but the books are very similar.  But then there are other authors that either 1) write in a wide range of genres from picture books to easy chapter books to YA fiction and EVERYTHING they write is amazing?  Or 2) They never seem to have a dud even though everyone is allowed a dud when they are a prolific author.  Or 3) their work is crazy imaginative!  How do they DO that?!  I don’t know but I do know that these authors never disappoint and they are all prolific and amazing writers. Prescient Dr. Seuss Environmental Warning Book: The Lorax (ages 4-12)

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss Warns About Environment Decades Ago

First published in 1971 long before concerns about the environment were common, Dr. Seuss penned The Lorax which warned against greed and unrestrained industrialization. This timeless tale is about the now remorseful “Once-Ler” who destroyed a pristine area that once flourished with fish, creatures and birds through his desire to “bigger.” The Lorax who pops out of the first tree he downs speaks for the trees and creatures but can’t change the Once-Ler’s mind until it’s too late.
