Best Beginning Chapter Books for 2nd and 3rd Grade

Best Books for Beginning Readers

My pubic library creates a great list for summer reading and this is the list I need for my rising 2nd grader.  My library doesn’t like Scholastic beginning chapter book series like Ninjago, Rainbow Fairies, Hiro Quest, or My Weird School. My kids’ first grade teacher does not love them either. Finding really good easy chapter book is tough which is probably why this list is so short. It’s culled from mostly newly published books. My 7yOld Son’s Favorite Books for Beginning Readers

Best Books for Beginning Readers

I was reading a post from Delightful Children’s Book, an excellent kids’ book blog,  when she confesses to hiding the fantasy chapter books her son prefers underneath the realistic fiction that she’d rather he read. I am the same about wanting my kids to read the carefully chosen books that I have selected for each of my kids. It’s just like the cobbler’s kids not having shoes, right? The children’s book bloggers’ kids all want to pick books on their own that are not sanctioned. Read more…

Week 1 of Camp Mom or Why I Can’t Keep a Routine

Books For Beginning Readers at Camp Mom

My two girls are in Ohio visiting their cousins so it’s just me and my 7-year-old-going-into-2nd grade son who opted to stay home instead of attending day camp this week. Still, it was helpful to switch in and out of the different modules. Here’s my Camp Mom diary. How is your Camp Mom going if you are doing this too? Read more…

Osprey Migration Books for Kids

Osprey Migration in Children’s Books

It all started when I saw the Osprey that Doodles and Jots photographed near her home in Cape Cod. Several weeks prior (5 to be exact), I spotted an Osprey in North Captiva, Florida. Could it be the same Osprey? Probably not, but it was fun to speculate. Read more…

Reader Challenge: Poetry for 5th Grade Girls’ Bookclub

Poetry for 5th Grade Book Club

I love getting book requests from readers. This one came in recently:

Hi There –
I read your blog, especially for inspiration when organizing my daughter’s book club meetings (I’m the host for seven 5th grade girls each month).

I was wondering if you ever discuss or read poetry with your kids and, if so, if you have any recommendations for me. I’d like to focus on poetry for our next book club meeting but am not sure how to go about doing it – whether we should read/discuss a few poems together? or if each girl should bring a poem to share?
