Action Adventure Books for 13-Year-Old Boy

Best Action Adventure Books for Teen Boys

I love getting requests for book recommendations. Katie had tweeted a request for books for her godson, a 13 year old avid reader. I had sent a few along, but, of course, if I had more information on what he liked, the list would be better. So I emailed her, and she replied: Read more…

Meteor!: Science Of, Finding and Buying A Meteorite

Science Picture Book with Meteor Activity

I found this book a while ago in the discounted book room of my favorite book store. I will pretty much buy any picture book by Patricia Polacco. Her advanced picture books are based on her life and the people that she knows. I knew that, but for some reason I thought this book was set back in time — say around the 1800s — where a village spotted a meteor! Suffice it to say that I should not judge a picture book by its cover. Read more…

Introducing Foreign Languages to Your Kids (Spanish and Chinese)

Easy and Fun Ways to Teach Kids Spanish and Chinese

I  find that learning a foreign language is very similar to dieting.  Changing my family’s lifestyle was key to successfully incorporating foreign language into my children’s hearts and minds.  Like dieting, crash diets (a.k.a. immersion) is wonderful in jump-starting foreign language acquisition however, without proper maintenance, it’s back to square one.  Again like dieting, there are times when I notice that great strides are being made, but there are also discouraging plateaus in which it seems like my children seem to be forgetting large chucks of what they used to know.  Fear not, just like the tortoise and the hare, perseverance will eventually win the race.

Chile: Culture, Children’s Books and Crafts for Kids

It all started with a post from PaperTigers about Mia’s Story. Having the same name, I had happened upon this book a while ago and was blown away by this picture book story of resilience and hope of a family living in a dump in Chile. While searching for more books, I thought that Pablo Neruda was from Chile and remembered a really great book sent to me by Scholastic a while ago. I though this would win a Newbery Honor that year, but alas, it did not. Still, it introduced me to his poetry meant for common people. Read more…

Top 10: Best Young Adult Books

Best Books for Teens: YA Books

When I was at KidLitCon 2010 (a blogging conference for those who are passionate about children’s literature thus including children’s librarians, teachers, moms –ok, I was the sole mom blogger, authors and publishing houses) a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that most of  the authors there were either MG (Middle Grade) or YA (Young Adult).  After hearing so much news on  the death of picture books, I thought to myself, ” Isn’t this strange how picture books sales are plummeting but Young Adult books are on the rise?”  So when waiting in the long lunch line, I asked those around me who turned out to all be Young Adult authors why this was the case.  The answer:  adults.  Adults are reading YA books on droves.  Think Twilight series.
