Crime Scene for Platypus Police Squad

It was a Friday afternoon. I got wind from Kellie at Walden Pond Publishing that something was going down in Dedham, Massachusetts at Blue Bunny Books. She warned me that similar suspicious activities had been happening there as it is owned by author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds of Ish and The Dot. Something involving Jarrett Krosoczka Playtpus Police Squad. I was intrigued. And wary. You can’t be too careful!

What do you think? Is this a crime scene?! The caution tape is certainly suspicious!

Platypus Police Squad, author event, Jarrett Krosoczka,

Why is there cake involved? And who were these two guys on the cake? Did they commit the crime?

Platypus Police Squad, author event, Jarrett Krosoczka,

No, it wasn’t the platypuses. They turned out to be the good guys. Maybe it’s this guy then! Do you know who he is?

Or do you think these lunch ladies look suspicious? They did bring in milk and cookies though. Did you figure out that it’s author Jarrett Krosoczka that is holding the milk and cookies?

That isn’t a crime. Is the Lunch Lady and her sidekick Betty involved somehow? Are they in trouble? Maybe they are here incognito in the blue uniforms. I’m not sure. Read more…

Mysteries Surrounding The Lemonade War Series

PickyKidPix just turned 11-years-old recently. Part of her birthday celebration was to meet one of her favorite authors who happens to live one town over. PickyKidPix became a fan of her mystery chapter books in 3rd grade but continues to read them — insisting on buying her own copy — even though the books are now a quick read for her.

After her soccer game, we brought a friend of hers, Abby, who claims to hate reading to meet the author as well. What’s interesting is that Abby loved The Lemonade War series and is a strong reader. She just doesn’t like reading. Ah, I think I can change that!!

PickyKidPix was similar to Abby; a strong reader who only read for school assignments. Abby says she doesn’t even do that. It just took a small fix to get PickyKidPix reading:

1) Meeting authors makes her want to read their books.

2) Peer recommendations and teacher recommendations persuade her. Mine barely count, by the way.

3) Identify genre and area of interest. My daughter likes award winning chapter books and realistic fiction. Special needs characters are a big draw. Historical fiction works too. She likes strong characters, drama from the get go, and a happy ending.

Abby really liked The Lemonade War series so this event was a good match. We got her a signed copy; always more enticing I think! And the result? PickyKidPix said that she finished it the very same day! A victory for reading!

Now, onto the mysteries!

Book Club for Kids: Chapter Book on Knights, Princesses and Castles

Virtual Book Club for Kids Ages 9 and Up

I first hear about the Poppins Book Nook from Piwi Princess on Google + Community Great Books for Kids. It sounded like so much fun that I asked host, Enchanted Homeschooling Mom, if I could join and she was kind enough to include me!

The idea is a virtual book club built around themes so bloggers can choose any book — picture book, chapter book, non-fiction, etc. — and blog on it with an activity! Doesn’t that sound like fun?! Read more…

Grace Lin’s Latest Chapter Book is Her Best Ever!

Grace Lin’s Latest Chapter Book Deserves Newbery

I don’t think there was a 4th grade or 5th grade kid I knew who read Where The Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin and didn’t rave about it though they were generally girls. It could be that Minli is a girl. I hope Lin’s audience broadens with her latest companion book, Starry River of the Sky. Rendi, the lead character, is a BOY! And he couldn’t be more different than Minli who is cheerful despite poverty and hardship. Read more…

4th Grade Skype Author Visit: Sheela Chari of Vanished UPDATED

4th Grade Mystery Author Visit

One of my favorite middle grade book blogs, defined as books for ages 9-12 years old, is From the Mixed Up Files of Middle Grade Authors. I loved the book too and the blog is a wonderful group blog of nearly 3 dozen middle grade authors who are passionate about writing and getting kids reading. I’ve won a few things from their giveaways including a Skype author visit by Southeast Asian American author Sheela Chari. Read more…

Superpower Book Club for 4th Grade Girls

My mom friend Cynthia throws a very good book club for kids. All three of her kids are in a book club and hers ALWAYS have both food and a really fun activity that relate to the book. It’s not an accident, it turns out. She tells me that she researches book club activities to plan out hers. Read more…

Top 10: Spawn of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” Books

Books Like Diary of a Wimpy Kid

I think that when a chapter book series is different and successful such thatnit creates its own mini genre that this is only a good thing. Just like Harry Potter which broke publishing notions that kids won’t read very, very thick books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid series also got kids wildly excited to read. And though the lead character is a boy, girls were also reading this series in droves. Read more…

The Penderwicks and Science of Dark Matter

Science in Chapter Books Like Penderwicks

I am a HUGE fan of The Penderwicks series by Jeanne  Birdsall. I love them all, but the second book, The Penderwicks on Gardam Street,  is my favorite. In this book, Mr. Penderwick goes on the dating circuit, much to his (and his daughters’) chagrin. The Penderwicks are back at home after the summer at Arudel (first book) in Western Massachusetts on Gardam Street. It  sounds like the perfect neighborhood full of pseudo big brother type neighbors. Not the kind that are spying on you but there IS spying going on in the book … I mean the big-brother-that-you-wished-you-always-had kind. Their neighbor Nick fits the bill as coach-t0-all. Easy Chapter Book Series for Girls: Clementine

Clementine is the New Ramona Quimby

Clementine series by Sara Pennypacker

My oldest received the first book, Clementine, from her book club.  She liked it so much that we got the rest of this early chapter book series.  I noticed it won a Massachusetts Book Award in 2007.  Finally, the other day I found the books tucked away on a high bookshelf and read them and I can see why everyone loves them so much.  I’d describe them as Junie B. Jones in third grade…she’s nicer to her little brother now.  She still gets in trouble but her heart is as big as her imagination and she’s a lot of fun. Read more…
