Massachusetts Book Awards 2012 For Grades 3-7th

Best Chapter Books for Kids

The fifth graders at my kids’ elementary school are challenged to try to read all the books for the Massachusetts Book Award. I’ve noticed many of them have won Newbery awards so it’s a great list. I found a breakdown for age appropriateness and have organized the books that way. I am excited about this list because there are beloved and acclaimed authors on the list as well as some who are new to me. Read more…

Happy Roald Dahl Day from My Daughter’s 3rd Grade Class

Roald Dahl Day and Our Favorite Roald Dahl Books

Now that my middle daughter is nine-years-old and spent the better part of the year (along with her classmates) voraciously reading Roald Dahl (with me besides her helping out), we both have a much deeper appreciation for Roald Dahl. We told her teacher about Roald Dahl day and she wanted to celebrate it as a classroom special day but unfortunately it was too late in the year at September 13. School has barely begun and the teachers are busy assessing where their students are. Too bad. What are your favorite Roald Dahl Books? Read more…

Predicting 2011 Caldecott and Newbery Winners

Picking 2011 Newbery and Caldecott Winners

I think Fuse #8  Production is one of the best children’s lit blogs around. Her predictions for Caldecott and Newbery Winners is usually dead on and I use her list to buy Christmas and birthday books for my kids because the timing of the actual awards comes in early January which is not perfect timing for the holiday season gift buying. Last year based on her list, I bought my oldest a stack of chapter books from her list, and my youngest, a stack of picture books. These are the chapter books my (at the time) 5th grade daughter LOVED: Read more…

Newbery winners by age appropriateness, newbery winners by grade

Newbery Winners by Grade Appropriateness!

I remember when I handed my daughter The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo when she was in third grade. We had just enjoyed Because of Winn Dixie together by the same author and The Tiger Rising seemed perfect from the quick cover once over. The chapter book was short, with biggish text inside.

A few days later, my daughter asks if she can please stop reading.

“Why?” I asked her.

“It’s too sad,” she replied.

I took the book from her and read the first few chapters. I was horrified to find out that this was a Grapes of Wrath level of sad kind of story. Not that this book isn’t wonderful or beautifully written but it was just too sad for an 8-year-old to bear.

After that I started reading ahead to screen all her books for her. And then I started this blog. I guess if I had this list, I wouldn’t be blogging!

I have added one asterisk to the books that I’ve read and liked it and two asterisks for books I read and loved.  I also think that you can go up a grade or even two for these books but I would not necessarily go down.

Best Chapter Books for 5th Grade Because They Are So Awesome

We lost power for 28 hours from Hurricane Irene yesterday even though by the time it reached Boston, Irene was just a tropical storm. 24+ hours without screens turns out to be a long time for me though my kids made out fine by taking the emergency lamp to the basement to pretend to camp out. By 10 p.m., I was pretty tired of the blackout was using my Color Nook as a light source while rereading David Senderis books. Read more…
