My five-year-old son has been hogging my iPhone and the family iPad all last week while we were on vacation. He loaded tons of “free” games which ended up costing us $10 — (my husband: “Does he know how to read ‘free’?” Me: “Yes, he reads it as ‘fee.’ Hence the charges!) — and we had to yell at him to turn off the screens. Except when we noticed he was playing Math Ninja. True, he’d try to cheat and slyly ask us what 9 + 6 is but we were on to him. It turns out to be a fun game for all my kids including my 10-year-old and 8-year-0ld, both girls. And, I turn out to be bad at it.

Math Karaoke App for Singing Multiplication Facts
You can eliminate the singing torture for both you and your child by using the Math Karaoke app from Rega Interactive. Why? Because my kids actually LOVE singing the math fact tables into the app and then playing them back.
Telling Time App for Kids
iPhone/iPad app, Learn to Tell Time, is not wildly fun as there is not crazy thumb action involved, but has layers of difficulty so it’s actually worth the money.
Fun Word Problem Picture Book for ages 6-10 (You Can, Toucan, Math)
This is a fun word problem book featuring birds with problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This would be a fun book to use for the summer to sneak in a little math but in a really fun way. The sweet spot is 2nd to 3rd graders, but even my preschooler will enjoy this book if we do the problems together by drawing out rows of birds to solve multiplication and division which would be new for him.

Life of Fred: Beginning Alegebra as serious as it needs to be is a totally different and actually fun textook method. You go as fast as you want.
