Best Educational Toys: Golden Apple Toy Awards

Best Fun and Educational Toys for Kids!

My brother-in-law turned me on to the Golden Apple Toy Awards, from GreatSchools:

“GreatSchools’ inaugural Golden Apple Awards offers you a list of smart, kid-tested toys that inspire real learning for every age. Out of 23 companies’ toy submissions, we chose the most promising products for testing by families with children in the target age groups. GreatSchools staff of educational and parent experts then evaluated the products for functionality, design, safety, and learning potential, incorporating the opinions of the test families.” Read more…

WeightNot Diet System has 90% Success Rate

Weight Loss Program That Works

Normally diet programs don’t make it on my radar system. They all seem to be over hyped and the results don’t seem to be sustainable. I’m not one for fad diets either. Again, it’s the question of sustainability. There are two things that I believe in for diets. 1) You have to TOTALLY change your habits in a way that you can do it forever and 2) Everyone around you needs to do the same. Read more…

Gadget to Keep Kids From Falling Out Windows

Window Safety Gadget

Thank goodness the heat wave has passed here in New England. With a heat index of over 110 degrees this past week, the heat was unbearable and the air stifling. It seems we New Englanders always have our windows closed between the bitter cold and the sweltering heat. Finally, some respite this week. I have kept the windows open throughout the house today to air it out and that reminded me of the nice people at Andersen Windows who offered to do a giveaway for a window gadget that keeps kids from falling out and hurting themselves. Safest Sunscreen for Kids and Adults

Best and Safest Sunscreen

The FDA is coming out with new guidelines on sunscreen but the big news is that many ingredients used in sunscreens are associated with adverse health effects in animal studies including increased risk of skin cancers. Ironic, no? I searched around and found a list of sunscreens from reputable sources including Consumer Reports, Dagmar’s Momsense, and the Environmental Working Group’s 2011 Sunscreen study which is widely quoted. All images are linked to Amazon if you want to check out prices (prices so tend to vary on Amazon which is why I don’t list them). Read more…

Sandals as Comfortable as Flip Flops

Best Sandals Based on Comfort for Moms

I grew up in a Southern California beach town, so you’d think that I’d have known about Sanuk for a while. Well … actually no. There are nary a surf shop near where I live but luckily my sister and her family came to visit last summer and she lives near the beach and a myriad of surf shops. She had a pair and she made me try them on (the pair above and now I own it too!). It was sooo much more cushiony than Reef flip-flops which I normally wear plus these were cuter. Sanuk is also ecologically friendly and are made of recycled yoga mats. Read more…

Top 5: Using Electronic Devices to Get Kids Reading

Getting Kids to Read by Using Screens

There are extensive and excellent posts on how to get reluctant readers to read with scores of great ideas including graphic novels, books on tape, shared reading, and the like. When The Reading Corner, a blog for Reading Horizons’ “At Home” division, as me to guest post for them, I had to rack my brain to come up with ideas to get reluctant readers excited without duplicating the excellent posts already on their blog.
