Gratitude Advent Calendar, Random Acts of Kindness Advent Calendar for kids

DIY Gratitude Advent Calendar: Day 1 of 12 Days of Shopping

Jeanette of Tiny Rotten Peanuts and I are doing a 12 Days of Shopping series. We cooked this up over a giggly Skype session with gift ideas that hopefully will help you out this holiday season. A few of our ideas are meant to amuse you as well! We hope you enjoy our series for the next 12 straight days.

We are kicking it off today with Advent Calendars with a gratitude twist. When I think of gratitude, it seems to go hand in hand with acts of kindness. I think a kind act helps us appreciate what we have and those around us. My idea for a Gratitude Advent Calendar is to make a DIY Gratitude Journal and choose a Random Act of Kindness to do that day OR simply write down what you are grateful for.
My kids like Advent Calendars for the chocolate and you can add that element too by doling out a piece of chocolate for each day in which a Random Act of Kindness is completed or when you write down something you are grateful for.

Family Fire Safety Panic, Plan & GIVEAWAY

Family Fire Safety Panic, Plan & GIVEAWAY

We recently moved to a new house and PickyKidPix and Grasshopper and Sensei — our two girls ages 12 and 14 — share the attic. At our old house, I was careful to buy fire escape ladders with hooks at the top that hang over the window sill. They were very sturdy but they took up a  lot of room and it was only a two-story ladder. Since the girls are on the third floor, their old fire escape ladders are now too short and I hadn’t gotten around to buying them new ones.

Fire Safety Ladder Conundrum

In my mind, I hadn’t figured out all the logistics:

  • If two-story ladders take up 1 foot of space, won’t three-story ladders be too huge to store?
  • Do we really need three-story ladders or will two-story ladders land them on some sort of outcropping on roof a floor below?
  • I wonder if PickyKidPix would use the ladder to sneak out at night when she’s a tad older?
  • Where do these ladders go?
  • Do I need one or two?

FREE Fun Factoid App: Parent and Child KidQ

FREE Fun Factoid App: Parent and Child KidQ

My 9-year-old son likes factoids and we are often waiting at pick ups for his older sisters or before his soccer game. My son would usually kill the time playing a game on the iPad but I like the FREE Parent&Child KidQ app more. It’s quick. It’s fun. It’s educational!

Scholastic Parent and Child KidQ App

The app is meant as a way to converse with your child by providing questions like:

  • Why do feet smell (my son likes potty humor so this makes him giggle)
  • Why is California named The Golden State (hint: gold rush)
  • Why do you think they freeze hockey pucks before games (hint: friction. fun fact: the first hockey pucks were actually frozen cow poop!)
  • What is the most popular team sport in the United States? (hint: hoop)
  • Why do you think Johnny Appleseed is famous? (hint: apple trees. fun fact: only one tree that he planted remains — it’s more than 180 years old and sits on a farm in Nova, Ohio)

Sphero is Worth Fighting Over

I received an opportunity to try out Sphero and I thought my son might like it since he’s learning how to program in Scratch and Processing (an object-oriented version of Java). What I didn’t realize was that Grasshopper and Sensei, a rising high school freshman, and PickyKidPix, a rising 7th grader, also wanted the Sphero, such that it was a bit of a fight for control! 4 Animal Picture Book Giveaway!

4 Animal Picture Book Giveaway!

To celebrate Todd Parr‘s  newest padded board books: Doggy Kisses 123 and Animals in Underwear ABC, I’m teaming up with Christina of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers to do a 4 animal picture book giveaway!! Yay!!

We love Todd Parr! Our first Todd Parr picture book was It’s Ok to be Different! and I read it to my oldest when she was in Kindergarten after her classmate’s mom recommended it to me, as a message that would help her son handle questions of why he had two moms. My daughter did wonder that, but out of curiosity, not in a judging kind of way.

We also loved his The Thankful Book which is another gentle message about gratitude. We also liked his TV show. And I checked out his website and found wonderful activities for kids. Read more…
