The Magic of Kinetic Sand

The Magic of Kinetic Sand

Kinetic Sand is a three-dimensional building toy made of 98% sand and 2% polydimethylsiloxane that mimics the physical properties of wet sand. Think of it as a concoction of sand + Silly Putty. That’s actually what it is.

The Magic of Kinetic Sand

It has an addicting “feel” quality to it. It looks like brown sugar but you can use it for sculpting, indoor play sand for children. The weird-but-good thing is that sticks to itself but not to most other materials or surfaces, and it does not dry out. Read more…

Kimberly Clark products at Walmart

Stock up and Save on Kimberly Clark at Walmart

Thank you to Cottonelle, Kleenex, Scott and Viva for sponsoring this post. You can find great deals on all these products for the holidays at your local Walmart via the Ibotta app.

I’m way over due hosting my neighborhood moms’ book club. I had it all scheduled a year ago, only to find myself at Boston Children’s Hospital when my son needed surgery to remove a cyst the size of an egg in his neck. My book club is finally back on!

Left Brain STEM Toys for Kids

Left Brain STEM Toys for Kids

Jeanette and I love doing the Left Brain/Right Brain Gifts for Kids list. She is taking the Right Brain art toys today and I’m tackling Left Brain STEM toys with a math or science bent. Is that even right? I looked it up from About Education:

The Right Brain

According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities popularly associated with the right side of the brain include:

  • Recognizing faces
  • Expressing emotions
  • Music
  • Reading emotions
  • Color
  • Images
  • Intuition
  • Creativity

The Left Brain

The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language, and analytical thinking. The left-brain is described as being better at:

  • Language
  • Logic
  • Critical thinking
  • Numbers
  • Reasoning

Recent research has shown that abilities in subjects such as math are strongest when both halves of the brain work together. The upshot? Get both sides of your kids’ brains working! This is the last day of our gift giving series. Thanks for reading them!

Gifts to Steal from Loved Ones

Gifts to Steal from Loved Ones

Jeanette Nyberg of Craftwhack and I are back for year two to bring you a holiday shopping series. Today we are back with our ever popular gifts to steal from loved ones. Our clever idea was to gift something that you can steal, share or snag a taste of. A gift for you is a gift for “us.” We’re sneaky that way. Her post is here.

Cook Books

Cook books are the gift that keeps on giving … imagine your loved one making food out of that cookbook for everyone to enjoy! Kids and teens are also learning a great life skill. I also really like this new hybrid of cookbook: the cookbook memoir. Sometimes it’s in the guise of a cookbook; othertimes it’s a paperback that looks like a novel but has recipes at the end of every chapter. I like them all!

DIY Gamer Kit STEM Toy

DIY Gamer Kit STEM Toy

I thought my son would enjoy the STEM toys from Technology Will Save Us, so I was thrilled when they offered me two kits. As soon as they arrived, my son wanted to build the DIY Gamer Kit in which you build your own remote control. We opted for the version with the parts already soldered in as my husband thought soldering might be too dangerous for our 10-year-old son.

My son looked for the instructions in box and was puzzled not to find any. Instead, he figured out that he needed to go to their website to watch video tutorials.

Gender bending is sometimes a form of social activism undertaken in response to assumptions, over-generalizations about genders, or transphobia. Some gender benders identify with the gender assigned them at birth, but “challenge” the norms of that genderthrough androgynous behavior and atypical gender roles. from Wikipedia

Gender Gending Gifts … let’s all be a little subversive this year and gift in ways that challenge stereotypes, like coloring books for adults! Check out Jeanette’s list here.

Today, we bring you Gifts That Give Back!

I like to have my kids think about giving back as we near the holidays. I read that teaching kids gratitude is the best way to assure that they will be happy.

Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power. From Harvard Health Publications

Last year, I tried my hand at crafts (which I am bad at) and created a DIY Advent Gratitude Calendar in which my family tried to do an act of kindness as we counted down towards Christmas.

If you need Random Acts of Kindness ideas, I researched them in order to do 48 for my birthday.

RAK, Random Acts of Kindness

Thankfulness, in our house, also includes Thank You notes and I have a free Thank You Card printable for kids that I hope makes note writing less onerous.
