New Year's Resolutions to Scare the Pants Off Me

New Year’s Resolutions to Scare the Pants Off Me

My friend Lydia convinced me that we both had to sign up for Haymakers for Hope this year.

Sign up now to be a part of Haymakers for Hope’s 6th Annual “Rock N’ Rumble” on May 19 at Boston’s House of Blues!

Haymakers for Hope

According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 40% of men and women will battle some form of cancer in their lifetime. Haymakers for Hope needs your help to change this staggering statistic.  The time has come to step out of the office and into the ring!

We are looking for men and women to train for four months at one of Boston’s top boxing gyms before stepping into the ring to literally fight cancer.  No experience is necessary, and we will match you with someone of similar size, age, and experience level. Throughout your four month training program, you will raise money and awareness for cancer research and survivorship.

Space is limited, so don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to help knockout cancer!

Boxing Fitness Giveaway

Boxing Fitness GIVEAWAY: The 30 Day Boxer’s Diet and BOXYGEN

I’m in that perimenopause phase of life that has some unpleasant symptoms:

  • Loss of bone. With declining estrogen levels, you start to lose bone more quickly than you replace it, increasing your risk of osteoporosis — a disease that causes fragile bones.
  • Changing cholesterol levels. Declining estrogen levels may lead to unfavorable changes in your blood cholesterol levels, including an increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the “bad” cholesterol — which contributes to an increased risk of heart disease. At the same time, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol — the “good” cholesterol — decreases in many women as they age, which also increases the risk of heart disease.

These and other effects are from The Mayo Clinic but it didn’t mention the most annoying one:

  • Weight gain.

Apparently, perimenopause also seems to give women a soft middle. Despite exercising at the boxing gym three times a week and practicing Vinyasa yoga once a week, I’m still gaining weight at a slow but steady amount. My mom friend Julie says the only recourse to address this change-of-life is to exercise more and be mindful about eating.

Zorpia is a Pfishing Scam: BEWARE!!

Countdown: My #2 Most Popular Post of 2015

Zorpia is a Pfishing Scam: BEWARE!!

Zorpia is a Pfishing Scam: BEWARE!! is my 2nd most popular post of 2015. After a bad experience when I accidentally gave Zorpia access to my Facebook in order to read a message “sent” to me by my daughter, I wrote this post. It took me nearly a week to shut down my Zorpia account. Zorpia somehow got access to my email and started emailing all my contacts with messages to join Zorpia from me!

I am convinced that Zorpia is not just a Pfishing scam but possibly the base from which China and/or Northern Korea are getting email addresses to use for cyber warfare.

My blog was recently hacked so I’ll be writing a post on that next. I think honest and helpful accounts of bad experiences are appreciated by anyone who goes through this same trauma! Or at least that is my takeaway from the popularity of this post for me!

50 Happy Things for 2015: Bloggers Unite in Flood of Gratitude

MaryAnne of MamaSmiles turned me on to this gratitude challenge:

Today I’m joining a group of bloggers who are uniting to blog about 50 Happy Things for 2015 – and we would love for you to join us! If you’d like to join in, here’s how it works: set a timer for 10 minutes; timing this is critical. Once you start the timer, start your list. The goal is to write 50 things that made you happy in 2015, or 50 thing that you feel grateful for. The idea is to not think too hard; write what comes to mind in the time allotted. When the timer’s done, stop writing. If you haven’t written 50 things, that’s okay. If you have more than 50 things and still have time, keep writing; you can’t feel too happy or too grateful! When I finished my list, I took a few extra minutes to add links and photos. Dawn has a linky you can join on her blog if you decide to write a post!

Staying Alive: Heart Attack and Living Forever?

Staying Alive: Heart Attack and Living Forever?

Yoga is just as good as aerobics, cycling and walking for cutting the risk of heart disease. The Daily Telegraph

Every minute, one person in the U.S. is diagnosed with heart failure – nearly 6MM Americans total. My friend had a heart attack last week. Luckily, he self-diagnosed himself correctly when the heart attack occurred and went to the emergency room immediately.

Heart Attack and Living ForeverHe was rushed by police escorted ambulance to a larger hospital where a stent was inserted. From the door of his house to the stent, just eighty-one minutes. Nine more minutes and permanent heart damage occurs if any part of his heart was deprived of oxygen. In his case, it was.

The Magic of Kinetic Sand

The Magic of Kinetic Sand

Kinetic Sand is a three-dimensional building toy made of 98% sand and 2% polydimethylsiloxane that mimics the physical properties of wet sand. Think of it as a concoction of sand + Silly Putty. That’s actually what it is.

The Magic of Kinetic Sand

It has an addicting “feel” quality to it. It looks like brown sugar but you can use it for sculpting, indoor play sand for children. The weird-but-good thing is that sticks to itself but not to most other materials or surfaces, and it does not dry out. Read more…

Stock up and Save on Kimberly Clark at Walmart

Thank you to Cottonelle, Kleenex, Scott and Viva for sponsoring this post. You can find great deals on all these products for the holidays at your local Walmart via the Ibotta app.

I’m way over due hosting my neighborhood moms’ book club. I had it all scheduled a year ago, only to find myself at Boston Children’s Hospital when my son needed surgery to remove a cyst the size of an egg in his neck. My book club is finally back on!

I made a quick stop to Walmart to stock up for this party last week and was glad to save money on Cottonelle, Scott and Viva products that I will need using the Ibotta app. With the Ibotta app, I saved (and you can too): Read more…

Left Brain STEM Toys for Kids

Left Brain STEM Toys for Kids

Jeanette and I love doing the Left Brain/Right Brain Gifts for Kids list. She is taking the Right Brain art toys today and I’m tackling Left Brain STEM toys with a math or science bent. Is that even right? I looked it up from About Education:

The Right Brain

According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities popularly associated with the right side of the brain include:

  • Recognizing faces
  • Expressing emotions
  • Music
  • Reading emotions
  • Color
  • Images
  • Intuition
  • Creativity

The Left Brain

The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language, and analytical thinking. The left-brain is described as being better at:

  • Language
  • Logic
  • Critical thinking
  • Numbers
  • Reasoning

Recent research has shown that abilities in subjects such as math are strongest when both halves of the brain work together. The upshot? Get both sides of your kids’ brains working! This is the last day of our gift giving series. Thanks for reading them!

Grateful to Boston Children's Hospital

Grateful to Boston Children’s Hospital

It’s been a year since my son had surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital. November is a good time for gratitude and I’m grateful to have such an outstanding medical facility in my backyard.

son's surgery at Boston Children's Hospital

Our road to surgery started off innocuously enough. My son had a small lump on his throat. I thought it was swollen lymph nodes and paid it no mind. The lump got bigger and my husband expressed concern. We took our soon to the pediatrician who was quite sure that surgery was not going to be necessary but referred us to an eminent Ear, Nose, Throat pediatric specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital. This is the doctor, our pediatrician said, that he’d send his own kids too. I like those kinds of recommendations!
