Easy Chapter Book Series for Girls: Clementine

Clementine is the New Ramona Quimby

Clementine series by Sara Pennypacker

My oldest received the first book, Clementine, from her book club.  She liked it so much that we got the rest of this early chapter book series.  I noticed it won a Massachusetts Book Award in 2007.  Finally, the other day I found the books tucked away on a high bookshelf and read them and I can see why everyone loves them so much.  I’d describe them as Junie B. Jones in third grade…she’s nicer to her little brother now.  She still gets in trouble but her heart is as big as her imagination and she’s a lot of fun. Read more…

Geisel awards, best easy readers, best early readers

Best Easy Readers: Geisel Award (aka Dr. Seuss)

The Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.  It was founded in 2004 and the first award year was 2006, so it’s a fairly new award. That’s great because it’s a list that is actually plausible to work through!

Marsh Award 2011 Winners for Children’s Books in Translation

When I ask if anyone has ever heard of the Marsh Awards, I want to say first that I have not heard of it so I looked it up:

The Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in Translation is a literary prize awarded in the United Kingdom since 1996 to the translator of an outstanding work of fiction for young readers translated into English. Read more…

Top 10: Best Beginning Chapter Book Series (ages 6-9)

Easy Chapter Book Series for 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade

Dragons and aliens and dinosaurs, oh my!  And for girls, there are interesting, mischievous girls to meet, as well as cousins who are really sweet. This is a category of early chapter books, beginning chapter book — more advanced than Henry and Mudge but not ready for Newbery Award winners — that is sorely lacking in quality series.  I sought out a bunch of new early chapter book series to f ind more options and I’m happy to say that there are some new good ones!  I also “test drove” out my recommendations on my own kids and their play dates … and the verdict was positive. Ivy and Bean was a hit – twice over.  Cobble Street Cousins were a hit in my 2nd grader’s entire class, and Clementine, though slightly more advanced is well worth the effort.  Read on for the rest! Top 10: Best Old Fashioned Easy Readers

While not all these books are from when I was young, they all have an old fashioned, innocent feel.  In fact, my number one pick, Ling and Ting:  Not Exactly the Same! by Grace Lin reminds me so much of my favorite Little Bear early chapter book series in that it has a tight story line that is both silly and sweet.  Easy readers are a rite of passage for both kids and parents.  I remember searching for easy readers that were not mind numbingly boring as both parent and child are reading together during this period of literacy.

Top 100: Best Books for Kids by Teachers (for ages 2-18)

Teachers Pick Best Books for Kids

This list, created in 1999 by The National Education Association, is the “All Time Greatest Hits” of children’s literature created by teachers.  There is also a Top 100  list created by children and strangely, many of the books are the same!  The original list is 1-100 with all the books in numerical order by votes but I have broken out the list by category types:  Picture Books, All Ages, Chapter Books (grades 3-6) and Young Adult.  Read more…
