The fifth graders at my kids’ elementary school are challenged to try to read all the books for the Massachusetts Book Award. I’ve noticed many of them have won Newbery awards so it’s a great list. I found a breakdown for age appropriateness and have organized the books that way. I am excited about this list because there are beloved and acclaimed authors on the list as well as some who are new to me. What about you? Have you or your child read any of these books? Please share what you thought about these books as well as any other book you’d recommend for 5th grade (plus or minus two grades!).

Middle School Books Hot off the Presses
This great reading list for Middle School kids is from the Newton Free Library system. I find that they have great book lists but sometimes there are so many of them that they are challenging to locate on the website. My sixth grade daughter read and recommends these books.
20 Banned or Challenged Books to READ!
I am going to make a point of reading these banned and challenged books, if only to understand where on the continuum they belong in my children’s hands. How about you? How do you feel about banned or challenged books? Please comment!
Best Books for 2nd Grade Girl but No Animals Talking, Fantasy or Adoption Themes
I remember how difficult it was to find great books for kids once they’ve moved to chapter books but are not quite ready for Newbery books.
Happy Roald Dahl Day from My Daughter’s 3rd Grade Class
My middle daughter who is now 9-years-old is Roald Dahl’s biggest fan and it turns out her classmates love him too. They weren’t able to do a class celebration (his birthday does not time well) but these are the books that they would recommend to celebrate!
Predicting 2011 Caldecott and Newbery Winners
I think Fuse #8 Productions is one of the best children’s lit blogs around. Her predictions for Caldecott and Newbery Winners is usually dead on and I use her list to buy Christmas and birthday books for my kids because the timing of the actual awards comes in early January which is not perfect timing for the holiday season gift buying. Last year based on her list, I bought my oldest a stack from her list.
Newbery Winners by Grade Appropriateness
Thank you to Hubpages for this information. There are additional book suggestions by grade if click here to see their post. I have added an asterisk to the books that I’ve read and loved (and two astericks for must reads!).
