Best Apps for Drawing That Kids Love

I didn’t have an iPad when my kids were in preschool so we completely missed this phase. My youngest had access to my iPhone and he played with the Grinch camera and made us and all his preschool friends into Grinch-like creatures after snapping their photo with my phone. Had I known that it was a precious moment in time, never to be duplicated, I would have saved those faces and emailed them to their moms if I were totally together. Read more…

Frog and Toad Science Fun for Kids

Fun and Easy Science of Frogs and Toads for Kids

Can you spot the toad? Ok, it wasn’t that hard. This toad hopped across my path the other day at the off leash dog park. It was the largest toad I’ve seen around here, almost the size of my fist. I happened to have my iPhone with me so I took a picture very quietly. Luckily, my dog didn’t spot it. I thought the toad has pretty good camouflage! What do you think? Can your child spot it?

Make Your Own Playdough Recipe

DIY Playdough Recipe for Kids

This is an old recipe from my first preschool.  My middle daughter used to LOVE to play with playdough but she didn’t like the stinky smell of purchased playdough.  Mix a batch and store in an air-tight container for hours of fun. My kids would make this (with the help of a teacher or parent volunteer) in preschool when they were 3 years old. They love to stir (just do it off the stove) and adding the food coloring is magical for them! And there is nothing better than warm playdough! Read more…

Music App for Kids on Sounds of the Orchestra

Introducing Orchestra Instruments App for Kids

I had to reach back into the recesses of my brain to remember junior high school orchestra.  I played violin for a few years, but actually my younger sister is the talented musician in our family.  She studied classical piano and competed successfully as a kid and is now a piano teacher in Southern California where she teaches out of two locations.  She told me that her young children like this app very much!  I’m not surprised because my sister is an early technology adopter and this app combines two things she’s really into: her iPad and classical music. Back to School Books on Bullying, Allergies and ADHD

I was just booking a long overdue orthodontic consultation for my middle child when the front desk lady and I both remarked about how quickly the school year is flying by! October already?!! Now that we are back in the swing of school, here are some new picture books on specific school issue topics. My kids were especially fond of the Princess and the Peanut: A  Royally Allergic Fairytale.   Read more…

Top 10 Children’s Books: Librarian as Super Hero (for ages 1-12)

Librarians in Children’s Books Who Change Lives

UPDATE: It seems that our beloved librarians are under siege due to draconian budget cuts in California. Why do we need librarians? There is a great article here from The Los Angeles Times. [excerpt: “To get them off the payroll, the district is arguing that librarians don’t teach and thus don’t qualify for the seniority protections given to teachers.”]

If your school librarian is in danger of being cut, I would advise strength in numbers and advocacy. Rally other parents and make a big stink. Do your research and present your case. You’d be surprised how a group of fired up parents can change the world! Read more…

Virtual Frog Dissection Science App for Kids

Virtual Frog Dissection Science App for Kids

We have a pair of West African frogs swimming around (barely because they are in need of a water change) in an enclosed ecosystem the size of a small vase.  My youngest was at a toy store and settled for this prize when I refused to buy him the really expensive toy he wanted.  Now it’s just me and the frogs.  I need to remember to feed them on Tuesdays and Fridays.  They sit in the dining room as a reminder that they still exist.
