How To Teach Kids About Money Management

Financial Literacy Training for Kids

I met the National Center for Family Literacy at BlogHer and enthusiastically support their agenda of teaching kids personal finance skills. If kid don’t learn how to Save/Spend/Donate as a child, I suspect that they will have to learn the hard way about managing money like I did, with credit card debt racked up after college. Read more…

New Chapter Books for 2nd Grade through 7th Grade

Chapter Books Hot off the Presses for Ages 7 and Up

My seven-year-old (nearly 8!) and I have been enjoying the Tales of a 6th Grade Muppet series by Kirk Scroggs.  It’s a series that is similar to the wildly popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid but with less bullying. What’s strange is that he has never seen the Muppets but he still likes the books. Read more…

Abstract Art Project for Kids: Koi Fish

Painting Koi Fish Art Project for Kids

The Koi fish at the Grant Hyatt Resort in Kauai were so beautiful that we surreptitiously fed them as you can see in the videos. I had never seen so many Koi fish swimming together with such gorgeous colors. I was inspired to turn this into an art project after seeing Deep Space Sparkle’s gorgeous 6th grade Koi fish paintings. Fraction Games for Kids

Please welcome my guest author, Nerd Math Mom Fun! I met her on Twitter and I’m thrilled that she is writing on fractions. I have to confess that I made my son (2nd grade) play math apps yesterday while we were waiting at the soccer field because he had too much screen time playing games yet we had a hour to kill while his sister warmed up before her game. Grace Lin’s Latest Chapter Book is Her Best Ever!

Grace Lin’s Latest Chapter Book Deserves Newbery

I don’t think there was a 4th grade or 5th grade kid I knew who read Where The Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin and didn’t rave about it though they were generally girls. It could be that Minli is a girl. I hope Lin’s audience broadens with her latest companion book, Starry River of the Sky. Rendi, the lead character, is a BOY! And he couldn’t be more different than Minli who is cheerful despite poverty and hardship. Read more…

Newton’s Laws and Grammar Rules Set to Rock

Music Videos Teach Middle School Science, Math and Grammar

The idea of using rock and roll to teach science appeals to me. I’m not sure how it would go over for Middle School. Will songs about math make math fun? Is it a way to so that math is fun? It seems like it would be a fun way to learn Newton’s laws of physics. And, if a band came to school to perform, wouldn’t that be a nice change of pace? Read more…

Chinese Words Are Easy to Learn. Really!

Chinese Writing and Language Is Fun and Easy

I found this great site, MemRise,  that has language instruction for Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish and Italian. I checked out the online Mandarin Chinese site because my kids are learning it and I had just enough Chinese lessons as a kid to know how difficult it is. Read more…

How to Be the Perfect Volunteer Parent Coach

Coaching Training for Parent Volunteers

PickyKidPix is lucky to have had great coaches for soccer — 5 years and running now. Living and competing in towns the mimic those in A Race to Nowhere, it’s easy to find parents who are out of control on the sidelines, screaming at their child or a teenage referee. It’s not a pretty sight. How do you create a supportive environment for your child? Our coach has very specific and concrete rules of engagement. Read more…

Art Project for Kids: Emil Nolde Poppies

Emil Nolde is one of my favorite artists that paints flowers. I especially love his delicate yet loose poppy watercolor paintings. I bought several art books for my daughter but none of them contained my favorite poppy paintings of his. I’ve collected them instead on my Pinterest Board, Virtual Art Museum.

I also have a Veteran’s Day craft and book here.
