Osprey Migration Books for Kids

Osprey Migration in Children’s Books

It all started when I saw the Osprey that Doodles and Jots photographed near her home in Cape Cod. Several weeks prior (5 to be exact), I spotted an Osprey in North Captiva, Florida. Could it be the same Osprey? Probably not, but it was fun to speculate. Read more…

Book Recommendations for 6th Grade by 6th Grade Boy

HI! My name is Josh and I’m 11 years young. I just happened to come across your website as I was searching for some books. I looked over a few of your lists and I found some very interesting books! I thought that I could send in some recommendations, but I found most of mine on one of your lists! I saw The Mysterious Benedict Society on a list which is my all-time favorite books! I’ve also read Savvy, which is my 3rd favorite book. So her are a few books that I just want to recommend. Read more…

Birds and Bees Talk

The Uncomfortable Birds and Bees Talk with Your Kids

My dad friend from high school suggested this topic. He has three boys; the oldest is in 4th grade. He said that he attempted “The Talk” but his son was really embarrassed and shouted him out of the room. That got me thinking: 1) I need to The Talk myself. 2) Why re- invent the wheel? I don’t know exactly what to say either, but why do we parents always try to do everything ourselves? 3) ugh! Read more…

The Smiley Book of Colors. Picture Book GIVEAWAY!

Picture Book of Smiles in Unexpected Places

This book makes me smile. I can attest that it appeals to older kids because my 6th grader snagged it when it arrived and asked to keep it.

The Smiley Book of Colors by Ruth Kaiser is a clever picture book that captures smiley faces in everyday objects. It also teaches colors. An upside red purse is really a smiley face! Can you see it? What I love about it is that it also teaches kids to see, REALLY see, like an artist. Is there a smiley face lurking about? Probably! You just have to see it. Read more…

March Madness Book for Boys: The Final Four

March Madness Basketball Book for Teen Boys

My kids have an elementary school reading competition conjured brilliantly up by our wonderful gym teacher and our old literacy specialist. Each class draws a team from the NCAA. They get extra points as their team advances but most of the points come from reading during the month of March and the scoring method is based on amount of time spent reading. Two grades compete against each other (K versus first grade,  and 2nd – 5th Grade). The winning class wins an extra session of Physical Education. Read more…
