Best Books For Teens Who Read 2 to 3 Grades Below

Books for Teens Who Read Below Grade Level

I received this tweet from Mama C and the Boys who are dear to me though social media. I love her blog on transracial parenting and though it, I feel like I know her boys. Her blog inspires me to be a better mom. She asked me via Twitter for a list geared to 12-15 year olds reading 2-3 grade levels below. I racked my brain for chapter books, graphic novels and non fiction for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade that is especially engaging. This list is a mix of middle grade that skews up (ages 9-12) and YA that skews down (young adult, ages 12-18).Let me know how I did and please make suggestions to grow this list. Thank you!p.s. I found a great list of books for boys from The National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance. Read more…

Physics of Circuits and Electricity for Kids

Science Projects and Games for Kids

My 7-year-old son played with this toy with a 5th grade boy while we are at a dinner party together.  They came back every ten minutes to show us the circuit boards they made. Some had light bulbs lit up. Others made noise. Still others were connected through a cup of water. The parents who hosted us said that this toy won Science Toy of the Year and that their kids played with it intensely for a few days. Read more…

A Million Miles from Boston, Karen Day,

5th Grade Chapter Book GIVEAWAY: A Million Miles From Boston

Best Chapter Book for Girls Entering Middle School

I’m lucky to have Karen Day as a neighbor. We met through Music Lovers’ third grade soccer team. Karen’s youngest was also on the same team and we had a chance to chat at the end of the season dinner at the coach’s house. Once there was a face to the name, I started bumping into her everywhere! We like to go to the same off leash dog park around a reservoir one town over and now our dogs are buddies. We also  like the same hot yoga studio another town over too. Strangely though, I’ve never bumped into her at the grocery store. Read more…

Who Owns the Money? Economics for 4th Graders

4th Grade Economics: The Money System

My college roommate, Rosie Rios, signs the money as the Treasurer of the United States. Raised in Hayward, California by a single mom with her 5 siblings in a two bedroom apartment, she is the epitome of the American success story and I am so proud of her. I saw her at my 25th college reunion and she kindly signed three “Rosie Bills” for my children. (Yes, technically they are defaced, but I’m taking them out of circulation forever as a collectible so I guess it’s not really defacing. It’s memorabilia.)
