Happy Music for Kids by Positively Kids

Music Teaches Power of Positive Thinking

Can kids learn positive thinking at an early age?  Can learning to be positive be an empowering skill for kids? This could be a powerful way to teach resilience. And if it’s as simple as fun music by way of a happy, snappy song, does it actually work? Read more…

How to: Pick a Preschool

Finding the Perfect Preschool

I was at a playdate today and I ended up ranting and raving about my frustrations with my cooperative preschool.  Don’t get me wrong, my child is having a wonderful experience, but a cooperative preschool is an entire family experience and my piece of it, a.k.a. “administrative position” has been rather annoying.  I could just be me.  I think that I tend to get annoyed as I exit a preschool, and this is my last year of preschool…EVER!  And, maybe I’m just jaded. Best Art Books for Kids

Please welcome guest author, Sarah Pinneo.  She is the author of Julia’s Child which will be released in January of 2012 by Penguin Books.  She is also the author of The Ski House Cookbook which has delectable cold weather food.  I am personally really excited for this post because my oldest is a budding artist and Sarah’s book recommendations are fabulous.  I will be purchasing Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Faces and Rosie Dickens’ Art Treasury for her!  Thank you, Sarah, for sharing this! Best Picture Books for Kids

Please welcome my guest author, Bola of SlimyBookworm.com, with her list of favorite children’s picture books for 2011. I am managing to make this into a short series of posts. I’ll continue with other guests’ favorite kid and young adult lit of 2011 until I run out of volunteers. Bola runs an online children’s bookstore so she is VERY qualified as both a bookseller and a mom. Please check out her eStore and her blog  too! Read more…

The Only Baby Gear You Really Need

Minimalist Baby Registry of What You Actually Need

Every new parent seems to get caught in the baby equipment trap including me.  The amount of baby equipment we bought and used minimally for our oldest could sink a ship.  We didn’t think we’d have a third kid so we had given away all our baby equipment after the first two.  This was the list we bought the third time around, and I would still trim down if I had to do it all over again. Top 10: Best Children’s Books Featuring Life-Changing Teachers (ages 4-12)

Books for Kids About Teachers Who Change Lives

As we ease into the summer and reflect on the our children’s past school year, it is the teacher who makes the difference between a great year and a mediocre or worse year.  I am sure that I am not alone in sending up prayers to get particular teachers for my kids next year.  This list is an homage to the exceptional teachers everywhere who dedicate their lives to making a difference.  And they absolutely do!  One day, one of their students may even write about their exception teacher as in the case of  a few of the books selected below. How Kids Acquire Foreign Language Skills

How to Learn Languages: Children’s Brain Development

My brother-in-law sent me this article about helping your child’s brain develop from NPR. These are some interesting factoids from the article:

  • Babies can differentiate syllables and new sounds from very early on, but there are ways for parents to help their children develop their language skills faster and more efficiently.
  • Language is acquired quite well before the age of 6, but trying to force your children to read before the age of 4 is an effort that doesn’t work very well because the brain is not very well-equipped to tell the letter ‘b’ from the letter ‘d’ and so on… Read more…
