Best Non-Fiction Animal Picture Books That Teach Math

Non-Fiction Picture Books with Math Concepts

My 2nd grader bought these books home from her school library yesterday and I pounced on them. Apparently, there were three available, but she was only able to check out two. These books combine a really interesting, behind-the-scenes-at-the-zoo, rescue story about a zoo animal baby and marries it with a mathematical concept. These books are perfect for grades 2-5. Best Easy Readers for New Readers

Best Early Readers

I know that it’s something that has been in the works for a long time, but, like a bulb planted last Fall, the leaves have sprouted and the bud is finally in bloom! Read more…

Best Apps with Science Concepts for Kids

I am starting to buy into this idea of teaching and really connecting material through games and apps. I was sort of on board with this concept, but since playing around with The Elements (a Harry Potter version of the Periodic Table) that my brother-in-law turned me on to, I am now a believer as I saw, with my own eyes, how captivated my kids were with the Periodic Table, an otherwise dull chart. Since my recollection of Organic Chemistry is quite scant, I really appreciate how I don’t actually have to do much except show my kids where the content is located to get them to read up on the elements. Best Educational Toys: Golden Apple Toy Awards

Best Fun and Educational Toys for Kids!

My brother-in-law turned me on to the Golden Apple Toy Awards, from GreatSchools:

“GreatSchools’ inaugural Golden Apple Awards offers you a list of smart, kid-tested toys that inspire real learning for every age. Out of 23 companies’ toy submissions, we chose the most promising products for testing by families with children in the target age groups. GreatSchools staff of educational and parent experts then evaluated the products for functionality, design, safety, and learning potential, incorporating the opinions of the test families.” Read more…

Learn Chinese Words Through Books for Kids

I was really blown away by this advanced picture book by Caldecott winning illustrator and author Ed Young. I had no idea he was Chinese but even more than that, I didn’t expect a picture book to cover a vast story about his own life surviving the Chinese war with Japan. Read more…
