Great Gifts for Kids Around $20 for Holidays or Birthdays

$20 Gifts for Kids

One of my mom friends asked for this category.  We just had two birthday parties so I was able to ask my kids what they liked the most from their stack of gifts.  I also periodically check Marshalls and T. J. Maxx for birthday party gifts to stock up my supply– hidden from the kids, of course!.  A great gift for girls is a blank or lined diary or fancy notepad and the Marshalls near my house seems to almost always have great ones for half-off which I like to give with a book (you know me, I love books!). Top 10 Children’s Books: Trying Out New (Bad) Behavior

Top 10 Books of Kids Trying Out New Behavior

I think it’s essential for children to try out new behaviour in a safe place. Like it or not, this probably means at home, on you, the parent.  It’s a child’s way of spreading their wings; trying out new personalities and traits.  A safe way to experiment is important because your child knows that you will always love her or him no matter what.  But a book can also be a safe way to try out new behavior as a reader if you talk about the book in the context of how it makes you both feel. Easy Harry Potter Series: Ghostville Elementary

Easy Chapter Books for 2nd Grade

My middle daughter wanted to post on this series and this is what she says:

” This is kind of like a Harry Potter for kids in first or second grade. Maybe even Kindergarten if a parent reads aloud to their child. It’s about these kids in third grade and they get moved down to the basement classroom, and they start to think that there are ghosts in their room (and it’s true!). This is a series that I highly recommend. There are eleven or twelve books. Read more…

Holiday Gift for Kids Who Like Office Supplies: Little Librarian

Little Librarian for Playing Pretend Library

Harley Gal Work Mom sent me the link to this gem!  My middle daughter who is 8 years old would have a field day with this as she is obsessed with office supplies and loves to organize her stuff such that it resembles a classroom, a Staples store, or a school cubby room.  Yes, she is an organizer, that one!

I’m not sure if kids love to play librarian but I noticed at the Boston Children’s Museum El Supermercado how much the kids love to use a pretend scanner.  Note, however,  that there isn’t one in this kit.  My kids never actually pretended to be a librarian though I would be really excited if they wanted to organize our jumbles of books! The Pharaoh’s Secret: Like The Red Pyramid But Better!

More Books Like Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

Marissa Moss‘s The Pharaoh’s Secret is a departure from her popular Amelia’s Notebook series but what a great departure it is … along the likes of Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles:  The Red Pyramid, but I actually think this book is better than Riordan’s which surprises even me because I love his work deeply! Outstanding Children’s Literature like the Newbery!

Best Books for Kids: Carnegie Medal Winners

I had to look up the Carnegie Medal in Literature Award in Wikipedia.  It’s another version of the Newbery with an accompanying award, the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration, aping the Caldecott.  It’s all good to me but surprisingly, there is not a ton of overlap between the Newbery /Carnegie or the Caldecott/Kate Greenaway.  There are plenty of great books out there that deserve awards so please check out this list if you are searching for more great books!
