Award Winning Children’s Books 2011

Caldecott, Newbery Children’s Book Winners and More

What is great about these award winning books is that many are discounted at Amazon now. It was also fun to read posts by experts A Fuse #8 Production and Amanda Stuckmeyer, a former Newbery judge, predicting winners for many of these awards. And they were dead on. The Newbery winner was the biggest surprise for me as I’d never heard of the book or author nor did it pop up in any mock Newbery contests. I’m excited to chase down these books and read them. I love it when good books are screened for me, keeps the riff raff out of my house! What books have you read and what books from this list are on your list to read, either for yourself or your child? Asian in America (Amy Chua, new Asian KidLit, dumpling recipe!)

Asian in America and Tiger Mom Amy Chua’s Influence

There is no doubt that Amy Chua’s “Tiger Mom” book sparked a reaction fanned, no doubt, by the incendiary article by the Wall Street Journal. I read somewhere that when people bother you, it’s because they reflect something inside yourself that you are trying to suppress. They are a foil into your own “dark side.” So it’s not surprising that an extreme parenting style that produces a child that appears to be obedient, talented, and smart is an end result we all to achieve. How is Your State Testing in Math?

USA Not Testing High in Math

How important is it to teach math to the gifted? I received this article from my husband who received it from our School Committee neighbor in Newton. The stats are alarming … for the U. S. with its emphasis on leaving no child behind is not doing a good job at the gifted in math and the result will be a loss of human capital which does not bode well. Read more…

Teen Cyberbullying Investigated: Where Do Your Rights End and Consequences Begin? by Judge Tom Jacobs

Written from a legal point of view, Judge Tom Jacobs puts cyberbullying versus the First Amendment into perspective. While this is a dense book full of case studies and tragic stories of cyberbullying, it would be most helpful as a handbook for someone who child is being cyberbullied OR someone studying or perhaps crafting guidelines on do’s and don’ts of internet communication and bullying. It’s must read for school adminstrators, teachers, and PTO/PTA board members. Read more…

Winter Boots for Slogging Through Snow ON SALE!

Best Winter Boots for Moms Who Deal with Snow

I have a list of criteria for my annual winter boot purchase:

  • Must be weatherproof (i.e. can walk in dewy grass with dog and not get wet, cold feet).
  • Must be flat (i.e. must be able to walk 2 miles in comfort AND be able to sprint short distances in case need arises to  chase after kid or dog).
  • Must be around $200 AND on sale!  This might be a one season only purchase, not so much because the boots don’t last but because the winters are long.
  • Can’t be ugly. Read more…

Important Home Heating Safety Tips

Space Heaters, CO2 & Fire Prevention Safety Tips

My husband sent this to me and as he takes care of the safety issues, I thought we were ok in this department. But then I remembered my middle daughter’s room which is always 10 degrees colder or hotter (depending on the weather and the swing is to the more extreme end) and thought of the mini space heater we added after she complained that her room was the coldest in the house. We are not sure why and my husband who is handy has been caulking and sealing in her room like crazy. Read more…
