Winter Boots and Other Cozy Things for Moms

Winter Boot Deals for Mom

It was probably the 60 hour power outage that me and my neighborhood suffered through, though not in silence, that is prompting this post.  We rallied and made repeated calls to Nstar bypassing the auto message recording to talk to an actual human, well advised by our also freezing neighbor to call around midnight when the calls are less frequent. Greek and Roman Gods: Mythology for Kids

It all started innocently enough.  I had just finished The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, the first book in his new chapter book series post Percy Jackson.  It’s a great read and I highly recommend it, as does my 5th grade daughter.  (Don’t worry, Percy and Annabeth are in the series).  Roman versus Greek Gods were occupying my mind. Riordan does a great job converging the two sets of seemingly similar deities yet pointing out the differences between the two (who knew?!).  I was always more partial to the Greek Gods myself and now I know why.  They were the gentler, kinder version.  Less warlike. More human.  More … interesting. Read more…

Million Moms Challenge: Healthy Body Image for Girls

Healthy Body Image for Girls

If anyone ever needed a boob job, it would be me. And there are times — shopping for bathing suits, for example, post nursing — when I thought deeply and seriously about it. But what’s held me back is this imaginary conversation that I picture myself having with either of my two daughters, now 9 and 11. Read more…

Books for Kids About Teachers Who Change Lives

As we ease into the summer and reflect on the our children’s past school year, it is the teacher who makes the difference between a great year and a mediocre or worse year.  I am sure that I am not alone in sending up prayers to get particular teachers for my kids next year.  This list is an homage to the exceptional teachers everywhere who dedicate their lives to making a difference.  And they absolutely do!  One day, one of their students may even write about their exception teacher as in the case of  a few of the books selected below. Advanced Picture Books That Teach Compassion

I’m starting a new little boy book club for my son and his best friend from when he was 15 months. The issue is that his best friend is a grade older. And his second best friend is two grades older. The moms are game to do a book club but I wanted to make sure the book  selections appeal to boys in grades 1 through 3 without going into chapter book territory. I decided to delve into the world of advanced picture books which I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE for rich vocabulary and the ability to transport into another culture, time or place. Read more…
