Newton’s Laws and Grammar Rules Set to Rock

Music Videos Teach Middle School Science, Math and Grammar

The idea of using rock and roll to teach science appeals to me. I’m not sure how it would go over for Middle School. Will songs about math make math fun? Is it a way to so that math is fun? It seems like it would be a fun way to learn Newton’s laws of physics. And, if a band came to school to perform, wouldn’t that be a nice change of pace? Read more…

Chapter Books to Support 4th Grade or 5th Grade Immigration Unit

Immigration Chapter Books for Fourth Grade

These are terms for my daughter’s 4th grade immigration unit. They also read several of the first four books on Nineteenth Century Immigration above but I’ve added some more books that fit the theme and tell the story of a more recent immigrant experience.

The highlight of this unit is the “Wax Museum.” The children are assigned to different immigrant groups and make a 3-sided display of what their country’s immigration experience was like. Read more…

Chinese Words Are Easy to Learn. Really!

Chinese Writing and Language Is Fun and Easy

I found this great site, MemRise,  that has language instruction for Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish and Italian. I checked out the online Mandarin Chinese site because my kids are learning it and I had just enough Chinese lessons as a kid to know how difficult it is. Read more…

Subtraction and Adding to Ten Math Facts Games

Subtraction Math Facts Practice Made FUN!

Now that I’ve attended two school curriculum nights, it’s clear that the teachers want us to practice math facts at home. I am noticing that all three of my kids have the most difficulty with subtraction. Addition is intuitively more obvious and multiplication is really just more addition. My kids less  confused by the idea of division, at least until they hit long division. Division is regrouping and can be reverse engineered through multiplication. Read more…

Things to Do In Oahu, Hawaii with Kids

How to Be the Perfect Volunteer Parent Coach

Coaching Training for Parent Volunteers

PickyKidPix is lucky to have had great coaches for soccer — 5 years and running now. Living and competing in towns the mimic those in A Race to Nowhere, it’s easy to find parents who are out of control on the sidelines, screaming at their child or a teenage referee. It’s not a pretty sight. How do you create a supportive environment for your child? Our coach has very specific and concrete rules of engagement. Read more…

Emil Nolde Poppies Inspired Art Lesson for Kids

Art Project for Kids: Emil Nolde Poppies

Emil Nolde is one of my favorite artists that paints flowers. I especially love his delicate yet loose poppy watercolor paintings. I bought several art books for my daughter but none of them contained my favorite poppy paintings of his. I’ve collected them instead on my Pinterest Board, Virtual Art Museum.

I also have a Veteran’s Day craft and book here.

Reading Challenge: 7th Grade Boy Who Hates Reading But Loves Skateboarding

Middle School Reading for Boys

I finally got to see my mom friend Lori in Hawaii. Our husbands played golf together for University of Hawaii and we worked together for about a year when I convinced her to relocate to Boston nearly 10 years ago. Unfortunately, it was a harsh winter that year and she moved back to Hawaii before the year was up. Read more…
