Gift Guide: Best Blocks for Creative Play

Best Blocks for Kids

I am partial to these plain heavy-duty wooden blocks from Community Playthings that look like the Amish made them. Hurricane Sandy Boston,

Hurricane Sandy Boston

Hurricane Sandy Near Boston

Compared to last year when we lost power for four and a half days (and it was below 50 degrees) exactly a year ago! I remember that we had to trick or treat in the dark using the flashlight app on our phones because our entire neighborhood had no power. We got off easy for Hurricane Sandy. Perhaps most of the trees with dead limbs or loose roots have been downed from the last storm when a tornado touched down in Worchester about 45 minutes away. Read more…

5th Grade Book Club Activities for Island of the Blue Dolphin

I remember reading Island of the Blue Dolphins when I was in 5th or 6th grade and really loving it but it was a kind of quiet book. I didn’t notice kids at school reading it either, and I assumed too old-fashioned and had fallen out of favor. When it arrived on our door step for PickyKidPix’s 5th grade book club, I was delighted! She hasn’t it read it yet though. Read more…

Club Soccer Survival Guide for Parents

This fall has been absolutely crazy for us. My kids decide that they wanted to play A LOT of soccer and so my two oldest, both girls, added club soccer to their town travel team. My son in 2nd grade, dropped karate for extra soccer skills training as well. The result: 14 soccer events a week. Yep, 14! Not only is it a crazy amount of driving but: Read more…

Gift Guide: Best Toys for Arty Kids

Best Toys for Artistic Kids (and Adults)

My oldest, nearly 13-years-old, is a creative, arty kid who wants to go to RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). She decided this when she turned ten after visiting the RISD museum. I think it was the gift store that did it for her; all the items are created by students, alumni or professors. It really blew her away and we ended up buying a small pile of gifts. Read more…
