Choosing your destination after college is much like those books. You get to decide where to go, and the outcomes are based on your decisions. Choosing what city or town you want to live in will provide you with a set number of opportunities in life and work, but most important in your decision-making is to understand what you want in quality of life.
Don’t move simply because a location has the job you want or the nightlife you’re looking for; if the region doesn’t make you happy, it’s not worth it.
For example, you may crave a big city lifestyle but hate the cold. Well, that’s going to eliminate the Northeastern US or Pacific Northwest. So instead, Southern California may be a good option for you.

Once you decide where you want to live, the next step is to dive deep into the area and figure out the specific neighborhood that is your ideal choice.
You may want to live by the beach to the mountains. Finding a neighborhood that provides what you need, like a job and social life, coupled with where you’d like to live, is what to decide upon.
For example, let’s say you’ve chosen to move to Los Angeles. Choosing the right neighborhood can be a challenge. What you need to know about Los Angeles is that it’s a vast, diverse city.
So if you’re looking at living near UCLA or USC or in surrounding areas, you want to pick a neighborhood that fits your lifestyle, your budget has ample shopping, and health care providers in the area.
When researching various neighborhoods around LA, you can Google Search neighborhoods near UCLA.
After a few results populate, especially with Google Maps showing you surrounding communities, use Yelp and more profound search terms to find more details about the community. Use search terms like;
- Neighborhoods Near UCLA
- Nightlife in Los Angeles
- Best Monrovia dentist
- Health care in Pasadena
- What’s the public transportation in Downey
- Places to eat in Whittier
The more detailed your area search, the better you will be equipped for apartment hunting.
Picking And Applying For Your Apartment
Once you determine the city and neighborhood, you want to relocate to, finding a place to live is the next step.
You could do a traditional apartment search going up and down various streets or reach out to a real estate property management company.
Or you can conduct a search on Craigslist or a rental app like Hotpads.
Another strategy is to reach out on social media to people you may know in the city and ask for recommendations on where to apply.
The key is to find a place to live in the community you want at a price you can afford.
Don’t worry if it’s not the perfect place the first time out. At this point, you want to find a comfortable, safe place to sleep and live, knowing that as you find a job, you can eventually move into something more appealing.
