One thing we keep saying to parents who want their kids to be bilingual but aren’t speaking the language yet is: the only way to start speaking a language is by actually speaking it.
I know it sounds redundant, but it’s very true. We’ve seen this over and over again — kids, or even parents, who’ve taken foreign language classes and can understand someone speaking that language, but freeze the moment that person speaks back and wait for an answer. This isn’t stage fright. It’s a lack of practice.
And one way to get amazing practice outside of an immersion class is by taking a trip to a Spanish-speaking destination.
First stop: Spain
If you live in Europe, Spain is the easiest choice. And while it has well-established tourist infrastructure, you can still get an immersive experience if you choose a smaller town over a place that will switch to English the second you look confused. Whether it’s ordering food, asking for directions, or a simple market visit, these small moments give kids low-stakes chances to use real Spanish.
Next stop: Mexico
Mexico is a fantastic place for a family Spanish-immersion holiday, with a little bit of everything for everyone. And while most touristy spots have heavy English-language facilities, you can still find immersion in plenty of places — or with certain experiences, like booking a cooking class or going to a taco stand and ordering food like a local.
Destination 3: Costa Rica
If your family loves nature and wildlife, Costa Rica is the place for you! It’s an amazing destination if you’re ready to mix Spanish immersion with a real-life jungle adventure. Try staying at an eco-lodge, and encourage your kids to ask the nature guides questions in Spanish rather than relying on translation.
It doesn’t matter where you end up booking your Spanish-immersion holiday — remember that the point is to have a beautiful family experience.
Sometimes locals will try to make things easier for you (they’re often trained to do this), but don’t give in. Encourage your children to be the ones who order, ask, and greet, even if it’s just once a day.
Another idea: keep a simple travel journal where the kids write or draw one new Spanish word they learn each day.
And most importantly: reassure. Mistakes are part of the whole journey. Mispronouncing something to a shopkeeper is a win, not something to correct on the spot. And if the shopkeeper does correct them, encourage your kid to repeat it back in a fun way.
Any of these destinations can turn a regular family holiday into an amazing language-building experience. The intention is what makes the difference.
And if at any point you want to keep the momentum going, at TruFluency Kids Spanish we offer online Spanish immersion classes with native-speaking teachers who guide and encourage kids on their bilingual journey. We recently had a family tell us their kid is now the official “order person” at their local taco truck. Isn’t that amazing?
