My friend Helena told me that the Winslow Homer exhibit was so crowded that she could barely see the paintings the first time she went. She returned on a Monday, right when the museum opened, in order to view his work.
I kept that in mind as I planned my own outing to the MFA Boston. I decided to go on a Thursday night when the museum is open until 10 pm. I had to fight rush hour traffic, and I also took a wrong turn, so it took me much longer than usual to arrive. But when I got there, a miracle happened. I found metered parking right in front of the museum parking lot!
Dinner time is a really good time to go. The museum has visitors, so it doesn’t feel weird, but it has a relaxed vibe to it. I actually saw someone napping on a couch! The Winslow Homer exhibit had about 3 people every two or three paintings, which is perfect! I was able to get up close and personal with his watercolors … the reason why I was so eager to go. Sadly, the exhibit did not include the Winslow Homer poster of a stormy beach that I hung in my freshman dorm.
Still, it was illuminating to see his masterful watercolors up close. He employed a scratch-out technique quite aggressively on some of his hunting scenes. The paper must have been 300 pounds! When it came to painting figures, he was quite technically accurate, but I especially enjoyed his paintings that showed loose sketches.
Do you enjoy Winslow Homer’s art? If you do, I hope his exhibit comes your way. Until then, please feel free to watch my video of most of his works.
