My Eldest won a MacDowell Fellowship!

MacDowell is an artist’s residency program in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The program was founded in 1907 by composer Edward MacDowell and his wife, pianist and philanthropist Marian MacDowell.

When our oldest daughter texted, screaming as one can do via text, that she and her business partner had both received a MacDowell Fellowship, I knew it was a good thing, but I had no idea what it meant.

I looked it up, and MacDowell Fellows are quite a distinguished bunch:

MacDowell Fellows are recipients of prestigious residencies at the nation’s first artist colony, where over 9,000 artists (architects, writers, filmmakers, composers, etc.) have created profound works since 1907. They have produced over 100 Pulitzer Prize-winning works, nearly 1,000 Guggenheim Fellowships, and numerous Grammy, Academy, and Tony awards.

My daughter says her next goal is a Rome Prize. MacDowell artists have earned at least 122 Rome Prizes. I had to look that up, too.

The Rome Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious fellowship programs and provides the rare opportunity for scholars and artists across a range of sub-fields to collaborate with each other.

It has an acceptance rate of 3.5 percent. The MacDowell Fellowship has an acceptance rate of about 5 percent.

My daughter and her business partner, co-founders of Beam Studio, will use their time at MacDowell to work on their Tidelands VR project.

MacDowell encourages applications from artists of all backgrounds and all countries in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts.

MacDowell is an artist residency program located in the small town of Peterborough, New Hampshire. Artists-in-residence need to be comfortable with a degree of solitude and disconnection from the outside world. Studios are comfortably furnished with the artists’ needs in mind. A MacDowell Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for two to eight weeks.

There are no residency fees. Artists are responsible for materials and travel expenses. MacDowell encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics.
