Since I was going to be in Washington, DC for NCSS, my husband joined me so that we could go to some of the museums. He hadn’t visited museums in DC since his trip in high school. I hadn’t seen the museums since graduating from college. We had a lot of catching up to do!
The top of my list was the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It was spectacular but also very sad. My husband said that the exhibit on Emmitt Till made him cry. My neighbor told us to visit The Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama, founded by Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). She said that it was a powerful way to see the connection between slavery, lynching, and modern mass incarceration. It’s now on our bucket list!
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture building is as spectacular as the exhibits. We also enjoyed the soul food served at the restaurant in the museum.
