With each year of life, children continue to test their boundaries and find their place in the world. For this reason, toddler tantrums are completely normal up to the age of four or five. These emotional phases can be a real challenge and test of patience for both parents and children.
However, there are ways to support a child’s development, strengthen autonomy, and set gentle boundaries at the same time. Montessori beds address this exact need: they provide a safe framework in which children can act independently without feeling restricted.
From around 12 to 18 months of age, many children begin to experience their first sleep difficulties. These challenges can continue into the preschool years (around four to five years old). Parents often find themselves facing a major challenge: balancing their child’s growing desire for independence with fixed bedtimes and necessary routines.
This frequently results in discussions, crying, or tantrums, often triggered by a child’s need for control. Many toddlers get out of bed repeatedly after being put down or leave the sleep area altogether. The underlying reason is usually not a lack of tiredness, but rather a developmentally driven search for autonomy and the desire to make their own decisions.
Reducing Power Struggles: How a Montessori Floor Bed Can Help
Experts recommend encouraging a child’s independence in order to build self-confidence, create emotional security, and establish calmer daily routines in the long term. A Montessori floor bed is particularly well-suited for this purpose. Compared to traditional beds, it sits much lower to the ground, allowing children to climb in and out independently whenever they choose. As a result, children no longer perceive the bed as a restriction or a threatening situation, which can significantly ease the bedtime process.
Parents do not have to compromise on safety when using Montessori beds. While children are free to move in and out of the bed, a pedagogically appropriate frame can also be added if needed. For very young children, a guard rail with a small door can be installed to provide additional security. Manufacturers such as Montoddler offer flexible floor bed solutions for toddlers that can be adapted to the child’s age and developmental stage.
Sleep Support Based on Montessori Principles
Montessori education is built on trust. Children should feel seen and taken seriously. This reduces resistance and emotional escalation, as children do not need to be loud or disruptive to gain the attention of their surroundings.
Despite this sense of freedom, Montessori pedagogy follows clear structures and recurring routines. This often begins with a predictable sequence before the child goes to their toddler bed. For example, children may always tidy up first, then wash, put on their pajamas, read a book, dim the lights, and finally go to sleep. This consistency helps children feel secure because they know what will happen next. At the same time, the freedom offered by Montessori beds gives them the reassurance that they can get in and out independently whenever they need to.
If a child gets up again after being put to bed, parents are encouraged to respond calmly and without commentary—no scolding, no renewed negotiations. Instead, a calm and relaxed attitude takes away the appeal of getting up and helps prevent escalation.
“Less talking, more calm” also applies to evening routines. Children experience their day very differently from adults. Especially in the evening, their brains are working hard to process all the impressions they have gathered. As a result, they may seem restless without being able to help it. When a floor bed for toddlers is made especially cozy and surrounding noises are reduced, this can bring noticeable relief. Dimmed lighting, quiet movements, and minimal words signal to the child that the day is slowly coming to an end.
